Stuttering/Buzzing Sound During Audio/Video Playback

Hi,

Recently I've been having some problems playing back any sort of media.  At regular intervals the audio will freeze/skip for a second and make a loud grinding noise, then resume.  This happens with music, streaming videos, games, pretty much everything.  If I'm watching a video or playing a game, the screen will freeze for a second, then resume.

I'm using an Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 64-bit, SP1.

I've tried everything I could think of, updating all my drivers, reinstalling codecs, running anit-virus, and cleaning out my system.  I've found that sometimes the lag corresponds to spikes in my DPC latency, but sometimes they don't, and I can't find out what's causing the spikes.  I've tried most of the solutions here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/19142484/19265470.aspx#19265470 ,but nothing seems to have helped, and I'm getting a bit desperate.

Any ideas?

Thank you, Tinman39! I'll look him up.......this buzzing is driving me crazy, and the frustration of trying so many 'fixes' that don't fix is maddening! Thank you again for your help. I'll let you know what happens!

Someone (I can’t remember right now)…suggested going to Computer/Manage/Services  and stopping

Intel(R) Matrix Storage Event Monitor….I did this and the problem went away!!

I stopped it, then set it to manual so it wouldn’t start again…

Thank you, Ken! I'll try that! Nothing else has worked and I'm hearing the buzzing in my sleep lately!

Hi Hawk1357, did you find a solution to your problem, I have the EXACT problem and have been managing it by restoring back to an earlier day prior to Nov, 2011.  Thoughts?

I restored my computer back 2 weeks prior to this buzzing happening. It did nothing to alleviate the problem. Then I had to download all the updates from MS that had been done during that time period. Where is this buzzing coming from and why have only certain computers getting it? Anyone know?

I tried the suggestion from  Mao.Tsetung posted on 11-06-2011 and yes my sound problem was fixed. I reverted to the previous driver. Thank you.

I went to Device Manager and changed the driver.  (   Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller (released in June, 2011  )

I now have version 8.9.0.1023. ( 04/06/2009 )

The sound on my Dell Inspiron 1545 is now back to normal.

Thank you Mao.Tsetung.

Is this for windows 7 64bit?  If so is there a link directly to the free download?

This is a summary of this thread up to now.

There is a problem of noise on the Inspiron 1545 & 1750 models with Windows 7. The problem was caused by an optional (non-critical) Microsoft update in  June 2011 of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager utility. The update was either corrupted or poorly written.

The problem was identified in this thread in November 2011 by poster mao.tsetung. The solution is to download & install the most recent version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology. There were some links provided earlier in this thread but they no longer work. Try this:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/chpsts/imsm
Click on "Intel Rapid Storage Technology -- Thu, 07 Jun 2012".

The newest driver is version 11.2.0.1006, dated 06/07/2012 and there are several flavors of that driver available for downloading. I suggest using one of these:
iata_enu.exe if you have an English version of the operating system.
iata_cd.exe if you have an operating system other than English.

=======================================

This solution also works for some but not all XPS L502x and other Dell laptop models.

There were some other solutions that also fixed the bad update:

Several people did this: go to Device Manager, find the Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, right click, select Properties, driver tab, roll back driver. Roll back to an earlier version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, 8.9.0.1023.

Some went to Windows Services and disabled Intel Matrix Storage Event Monitor. Or just set it to "manual" start up.

Some just uninstalled the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

Thank you very much, Jimco, for the info!!  I did install the latest driver and seems to work!

(my temporary fix until now was to stop the Intel Matrix Storage thingy in Services...)
