Lapton Not Turning ON

I have an Inspiron 1721 that was working fine last night, then wouldn't turn on this morning. It started to boot up as normal, then the screen went blank for a few minutes. I manually shut down and turn back on. The power light is the only light on, but it's dim. It sounds and feels as if something is running inside, and when I press the power button, it turns off instantly (usually you have to wait about 5 seconds for it to shut down).  I tried turning on without the battery, same thing.  I tried turning on without AC power, same thing.  Any suggestions?

Connect an external monitor to the notebook and boot it up. Press FN F8 to toggle between the monitor and the LCD. Do you get a picture on the monitor?

I don't get to that point. It never boots up. The power light comes on, but it doesn't appear to be running...

Remove the Battery, Dvdrom drive, expresscard, or any device you have plugged in externally. Unplug the A/C adapter. Remove and reseat the memory modules. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Plug in the A/C adapter and see if it will POST with just memory. If not then try one memory module at a time in one slot at a time. What are your results?

My issue is not what happens after it starts to boot, my issue is getting it to turn on, period. The power light comes on, and thats it. It's like the lights work, but the motor will not turn over. I have no idea if the POST process has been affected, I don't get that far.

The steps I have given you are to get it to boot with minimal devices as possible. If you have eliminated all devices and still can not get it to boot then you have an issue of bad memory or bad motherboard. If you have an a/c adapter that has a green light on when you plug it into the computer and it goes out when you press on the power button then you again have either a bad motherboard or bad d/c board. I am attempting to see if we can get it to boot but if you are not willing to follow the steps I have given you I can not help you any further.

I never said I wouldn't try, in fact, I already tried the steps you advised me, The results were the same, no change. But I agree, I may need a new motherboard. Thanks for your help.

Having the same problem with my Inspiron M5030. Coming out of sleep mode, sometimes goes blank as I'm typing in my password.  Usually have to totally shut down the computer. This has happened several times. Depending on what I was doing when the computer went to sleep, sometimes it will give the screen saying Windows was unexpectedly shut down & ask how I want to start up.  Very irritating!  Happens with or without battery.
