Motherboard/CPU Compatibility

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 and an Optiplex GX280_ both Small Form Factors...

The 755 is running on a 250 Watt power source with a 2.00 Ghz CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E4400

- PU052 motherboard _ Socket LGA775

The GX280 is at 160 Watts of power with a 3.20 Ghz CPU - Intel Pentium 4 540 - quad core

- also a socket 775 mobo...

- My question is,

could I transfer the 3.20 (540 of the GX280) over to the 755? I know that they both have the same socket layout, but is this particular CPU (the 540) compatible with the 755's motherboard?

Hi Oppenheimer,

I'm not sure why you think the Pentium 4 540 is quad core. It's single core with HT. This CPU swap would not work anyway.

The Q35 chipset of the 755 does not support P4 chips (not all LGA775's are interchangeable).  The 755 is clearly the better machine (assuming it is still functional), so even if you could put the P4 processor in it, I'm not sure why you would want to.  The P4 clock speed is faster, but it's not always about the clock speed (otherwise they would have kept increasing speeds rather than developing more computing cores) ... as osprey said, the P4 has only a single core.  Looking them up on CPUBenchmark.net, the Pentium 4 3.2 has a score of 524, while the Core 2 Duo E4400 has a score of 1165.  They aren't even in the same class.
