Dimension 2400 sound/modem drivers not installing?
Did a clean install on a Dimension 2400 of Win XP SP3.
Installed the chipset, video, NIC drivers from the Dell site, and installed no problem.
However, when I go to install the sound or modem drivers, they won't install? Even if I try to pick the driver manually and go to the folder where the driver(s) extracted, they don't install.
Any ideas? I am stumped.
Also, the BIOS in the download list for the specified service tag will not install - says system is incompatible.

Is this the file you're using for the sound: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=R94481

When you say they don't install, what are the symptoms? Are any error messages displayed?

I don't recall the exact messages - but it is like the system is not recognizing the driver as the correct one. It won't install.
If I run the SoundMax setup, it says "driver not found. reboot system and run again". Of course doing so comes up with the same message.

The support site was offering R58182 as the only audio driver based on the service tag. The one you suggested worked. Now for the modem driver...

Looking up the modem driver based on the model instead of the service tag gave me the correct driver as well.
By service tag, it says that the BIOS rev should be A09, however from what I can see, Dimension 2400 only gos up to A05. What a mess. Thanks everyone for your input. I wasted way too much time by using Dell's suggested method of using the servive tag to identify drivers.

Thanks, but the motherboard has not been replaced. Perhaps the support site is recommending the incorrect BIOS and drivers.

So no Fx compat at dells forum either?
I always thought it was a09.
Looks like someone has been doing house cleaning and apparently 2400 and 2400C (compact?) are 2 different beasts.
It has always had a problem d/ling a 2400 graphics and sound, but now the bios D460CA09.EXE says for 4600 CHARLIE and NOT compatible with NON CHARLIE
Didn't they used to have old vers too?
Will do some further research on 2400 / 2400C diffs
However...
1. Either D460CA09.EXE is BAD
or
2. D460CA09.EXE is ONLY for CHARLIES
Since it will NOT install!

A 2400 is NOT the same bios/mobo as 2400C or 4600C!!
2400 has always had trouble with sound and graphics (because they are for 2400C?)
I grab old ones I saved or the driver disc 05768D / 9G705. Intel has a graphics that will work by chipset.
Now the BIOS is wrong too.
My search is by Service Tag.
SpeedStep and Dells 2400 page claim
ftp.us.dell.com/.../D460CA09.EXE
Is for 4600C and 2400C (I cannot comment on its accuracy)
Not sure what this has to do with a 2400 thread, but it is definitely NOT the "Suggested Answer"
The 4600 apparently goes to a12 and will definitely NOT work on 2400
ftp.us.dell.com/.../D4600A12.EXE
As stated by Microfiche 2400 apparently goes to A05
ftp.us.dell.com/.../D2400A05.EXE
If you want older ones just change last numbers.
As for FIX history who knows.
If some got deleted or renamed on the FTP who knows?
Also if history is any indicator A05 will definitely be the last version ever released.
Hope this helps others that land here from google and waste time with the "Suggested Answer"
Any idea why Dell hates firefox so much?
