studio 1537 - 65535 hr 00 mins (100%) remaining but battery not charging

i have a real strange issue with the laptop

I'm getting the battery icon in windows7, but its not detecting the AC, just says:
65535 hr 00 mins (100%) remaining

If i remove the battery it says no battery detected

If i look in dell battery meter / battery health, its says the system cannot communicate with the battery

The battery has no power, if i unplug the AC the machine switches off instantly

The LED's on the battery don't light up
I was given the laptop, and not really sure of the history, but i cannot update bios as says you need to attach the AC adapter

I'm using an AC adapter from a different dell laptop, but it's a PA-12 which the laptop says is compatible (on sticker on bottom)

Has anyone come across this issue before? i don't want to waste money buying a new battery if it's the board that needs replacing
Is there a charging module on this laptop? or do i need to replace whole board?

Thanks

Go into the BIOS setup - does the setup detect the AC adapter, or is it listed as "unknown"?

This model does have the power jack on a cable - it's not part of the system board.

Hi ejn

In the bios, next to AC Adapter it says: NONE

Even though there is an ac adapter connected

I'm not sure i understand what you mean when you say

>This model does have the power jack on a cable - it's not part of the system board.

Can you explain some more please, also what would you suggest i do next?

thanks for your help

If you've tried multiple adapters, none of which are correctly identified, the battery isn't the problem - the power jack or the mainboard itself is the issue.

The first thing to try replacing is the power jack:

...also. as well as the PA-12 Ac Adapter, i've tried the PA-3E adapter

The PA-3E comes up with an error when starting the system saying its not recognised, and that the battery wont be charged

once in windows the battery icon in the task bar is empty with a red cross against it and says 0% remaining

the battery is most likely duff, but not sure whether i need a new battery, new charger or new motherboard (or all 3)

Thanks

Mark

thanks

Would that mean the battery would not recharge if the Power jack is duff?

Correct - whether it's the adapter or jack, if the adapter isn't properly identified, the battery will not charge.

I have the exactly same problem. Some time it says fully charged and 6535 hours remaining. It is certainly no issue with motherboard. I had tried all PA3 and PA12 adopter and nothing was happened. Finally I'd replaced the battery and the problem got solved. My problem started when my adapter got burned due to high voltage fluctuation. I thought it was only the adapter which I lost but later I discovered, the batter itself got some problem with this.

Thanks

I bit the bullet and bought a new battery.

The battery is recognised, but will not charge
I've ordered a new DC Power Jack from ebay for £10 so lets see if that works!

I've now replaced the DC power jack  and battery...problem remains

the message i get now is

111hr 00min (2%) remaining

I presume this is due to the fact there is a little bit of charge in the new official dell battery

What to try next????

I've now replaced the motherboard with a second hand 1535 one from ebay

It works now, and the connector that the power button slots into on the motherboard looks a bit fried (on old motherboard)

So my advice to anyone else is to look at this white connector and look for signs of frying

If it looks clean and in factory condition, then it will most likely be the power switch cable

annoying, the 1535 board wont take my 2.4 cpu, so i'm stuck with a lower powered computer as the board came with a 2.0 chip

but I do have a working computer again

Hope this article serves someone else looking for it on google
