"Alert! cover was previously removed. Strike the f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility."
I googeled the alert message and followed a suggestion that I change the bios setting:
BUT, I still get
"strike the f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility".

Boot to system setup (F2) and find the security settings. In there, you'll find chassis intrusion. Turn it OFF, then reboot and, if you care to, you can turn it back on. Otherwise, you may leave it off.
This feature is meant for businesses. Personal users don't have much use for this feature.

If you open BIOS Setup again, is Chassis Intrusion still set to OFF? If not, you may need to replace the motherboard battery because the default setting is ON.
You may need to clear that error by resetting BIOS to factory defaults:
Open BIOS Setup and write down all the current settings.
Then power off and unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open the case and remove the motherboard battery
Press/hold power button again for ~30 sec
Reinstall the battery (right-side-up!)
Reboot and go directly into BIOS Setup again. Make sure all settings match what you wrote down. Be sure to save any changes before exiting BIOS Setup.

If somebody "did format", do you mean they erased the drive? Did they reinstall Windows? In that case your stuff is probably gone...:emotion-3:
What color are fhe 4 diagnostic LEDs on rear of the tower when you get that error message?
Open BIOS setup <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> and set the Diskette Drive to OFF, assuming you don't have an internal floppy drive in this system. Then make sure that SATA Operation is set to Normal. Now look at Drive 0 through Drive n and make sure the port where your hard drive is connected, typically Drive 0, is turned on and the drive is recognized.

No, look at Drive 0 through Drive n settings in BIOS Setup. It should be the one listed right above SATA Operation in BIOS Setup. <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> :emotion-5:
Your boot hard drive should be connected to the SATA 0 port and correctly identified (assuming it is a SATA drive rather than an IDE drive).
