Problems with the Precision M4400 and the Nvidia quadro 770M

I have a problem with my Precision M4400 and Nvidia Quadro 770M. After I have installed Windows 7 64 bit, I have problems with the graphics card. I get blue screens or graphical errors. I've tried several driver versions. In the Nvidia forum had this problem even more. Here they told me that only a BIOS update of the graphics card to solve the problem. The BIOS update but I would have to refer by DELL. So my question is this problem with Dell is also known, and there is already a BIOS update to the Quadro 770M?

Same error (BSOD) after I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit...

BSOD error is that it tried resetting the display driver, which apparantly failed. Can be reproduced for exaple by opening the 'customize windows look to personal preferences'-panel (rightclick on desktop); this is where you select the themes etc. Apparantly it then does something to the video card which brings up the BSOD; probably the same after recovering from Standby etc.

I'm not going to try the voltage change tool, as this will affect battery time and sounds like a work-around of the actual issue.
After a lot of trying the new version(s), I'm now going back to the Dell-provided version (2010...2+ years old!!).

@Dell: Please fix this issue!!!

I'm now back on version 8.6.11.8992 (12-5-2010) from the Dell site and the problem is gone. Unfortunately this driver is going to be 3 years old!!

And here is the link to the NVidia forum where this same issue is being discussed.

I tried many things such as installing the latest drivers for this graphics card and the latest for the 9600m GT.  I also flashed A26, which had no positive effect.  I was going to flash the video BIOS, but I couldn't get a backup of the existing VGA BIOS to edit (and was wary of using one downloaded).  Eventually I disabled Intel SpeedStep (the CPU feature in the BIOS that dynamically adjusts the CPU speed and core count).  After doing this, the blue screens immediately stopped.  This was on Windows 8 32bit.  At that point I was able to roll the drivers back to the ones included with the OS, and things seem to be OK.  I'm going to re-enable SpeedStep and just live with the native drivers.

can't run Powermizer as it prompts "group policy doesn't allow".

So went to dell support site, found a 2010 release of video drive, file name A11_R288344, driver version 189.92, then the blue screen problem gone, even now on AERO theme, for last two hours.

I have the Bios v27 and am looking for the setting you are referring to in 1. unchecking vt-x.option in the BIOS (a hint from somewhere else).  I have diligently searched through this BIOS version and do not see anything like this.  If I need to upgrade the BIOS or downgrade it to see this option, I would do it as this machine is dead in mere seconds with the BSOD after signing into windows.

Thanks for your help and repost to this message!

Not sure if you read through the posts or not, but its been mostly determined to be the graphics driver / bios setting of Powertimzer. We have to turn off the voltage balancer setting.

I had the same issue with the M4400. I tested all different drivers and settings in Windows with no luck. I finally got it working using the recommendations from here and the Nvidia forum.

1. Uninstall the device and all drivers in device manager

2. Reboot

3. install nVidia drivers 285.62

4. Reboot

5. Run Powermizer Switch and select Off

6. Reboot

Since performing these steps i have had no BSOD.

After about 15 tries, I was able to roll back the driver before crashing and IT WORKED!  Immediately the screen brightened and no more crash!! :emotion-15:

Right click on start > Control Panel > Screen Resolution (Appearance and Personalization) > Advanced Settings > Properties > Driver > Roll Back

The only instructions I was able to pull off (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19528481.aspx) prior to rolling back the driver was to type bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy in command.  I have no idea if this had any effect whatsoever on the eventual success, but thought I'd include it just in case. I got into command after windows offered it to me after a crash.

Problem occurred after clean Windows 8.1 install on my Dell Precision M4400.

update

the above solution required rolling back the driver upon each boot up, and resulted in a degraded experience with some applications.

so, i tried a windows 7 driver from 2011, and all is well for over a week now.  Applications run like a dream and no more bsod.

here is the driver I installed:

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/285.62/285.62-notebook-win7-winvista-32bit-international-whql.exe. Note I replaced the '64' in the URL with a '32' because mine is 32bit.

The 64 bit is here:

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/285.62/285.62-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe

i found the links here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19484118.aspx

Thank you for posting the 337.88 driver info.  It's working nicely on my M4400 as well (A29 BIOS).  No INF file modification required.  Straight forward driver installation.

Hi,

after instalation  atempt of  GeForce 337.88, I got notification "this driver is not compatible with your hardware". Is it related in any way to second part of your post? If yes, then what practicaly mean this part of your recommendation: "you may have to download a modified INF file with the inclusion of the Quadro FX 770M ID (= "NVIDIA_DEV.065C = "NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M")." ? Where to get it? How to proceed this modification?

Thanks for answer. If it works, i will glorify you.

Ok, it's weird I think. Did you do a clean uninstallation of the previous one? Anyway...

So once you've extracted the installation files into a folder don't go on with the automatic installation. Just cancel it.

Go inside the installation folder and search the nv_disp.inf file, edit it and add the line "NVIDIA_DEV.065C = "NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M" as explained (more precisely) here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=377158

Then launch the setup.exe file and everything should be OK.

I hope it will help you because those drivers are really "life-saving".

Keep in touch.

Yes, I have uninstalled previous one.

I have found out, that the file "NVIDIA_DEV.065C = "NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M" is already included in adequate folder! So here is nothing what is supposed to be change or add. :- / ...

I have no more ideas system keeps notification about "failed instalation". I used this instalation file http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/75992/en-us
