Updating Graphics Card Drivers on XPS8500

Hi All

I've just bought the XPS8500 with the ATI HD7570 DDR5 1GB RAM GPU option inside and i've noticed that the windows driver for this is dated back in October 2011.

I thought it would just be a case of downloading the latest driver from the AMD website but after trying to install the latest Catalyst and ATI driver ( 12.6 released 28/06/2012) i've noticed it's still showing the old versions of both driver and Catalyst (11.1).

I'm guessing it's something to do with the GPU being specially made / adapted for Dell therefore i can only download the drivers from Dells support page. Am i right in thinking this? If so, is there any way of getting a more up-to-date driver? The reason why i'm quite eager for the and updated one is games such as Diablo 3 are now informing me my GPU driver is out of date and i may run into problems when playing the game, and seeing this is the reason i upgraded i really don't want this to happen.

Alternatively, would installing a new, retail GPU invalidate my warranty?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Dellboy,

In the Video FAQ, Dell-Chris M has instructions on how to clear out the old AMD drivers to install the current ones.

Of course, you are free to install any video card and it will not invalidate your warranty. If you buy a card from Dell, they'll cover it in your system.

Thanks for the reply Osprey, I checked out Chris M's FAQ and he does state it's the Dell driver so i think i'm stuck with the old one.

On another note, can anyone recommend a better Graphics card that i cancel install using the current 460w PSU?

Today I called Dell about my xps8500, as I will be installing a Dell supplied Visiotek Radeon 7850, and I was advised to uninstall the old driver, and go to AMD for their latest driver. My PC currently has the entry level Radeon HD7570.

You should call tech support to confirm that you can use AMD's latest driver.

I would go with the HD 7770.  It is priced well and you are not spending a whole lot of money on the upgrade.  It will also be much better than what you have and you can use the latest drivers from AMD.

Thanks for the info. The HD7770 indedd looks a decent card and it's very power efficient. Would this mean i wouldnt have to update my 460w PSU?

You would not have to change out your power supply for the HD 7770.

Also would the HD7870 work with my current 460w PSU?

My best guess is that the HD 7870 would work with your current PSU if you want to spend $300 on a video card.  You are probably looking at around a 50 watt difference in a gaming situation between the HD 7770 and the HD 7870.  The HD 7850 would be another option which would fall right in between these two.

Also, the Vidsiotek 7850  is rated for a 450 watt PSU, while the 7870 is 500 watts

I bought the xps8500 with the Radeon 7570, which is entry level. I then ordered, from Dell parts, the Radeon HD7850, which falls just below the 7870. It cost $250.00, which is both Dell and market price.
