Memory Upgrade in Dimension 9200 (XPS 410)
I want to increase the amount of memory in my Dell 9200 or XPS 410 but am getting conflicting information regarding the feasibility of doing so. I plan to do a clean install of Windows 7, 64 bit after installing the 4GB Corsair DDR2 Memory modules shown on the Dell website. My current configuration is Windows 7, 32 bit with a total of 4 GB of RAM; I wish to increase the amount of RAM to 8GB but have been informed by Dell Tech that this computer model is maxed out at 4GB even if I convert to the 64 bit OS. I note that this topic has been visited before in these forums but a few years ago. Can anyone offer definitive information regarding whether or not I can install 4 2GB DDR2 Corsair modules to achieve 8GB RAM or something near that level?

I'm running 8GB of Corsiar in my XPS410 for about 3 years. 2GB X4 sticks.

The XPS 410 / Dimension 9200 system uses dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM, which offers a performance advantage over DDR1 memory technology. The SDRAM controller is integrated in the Intel P965 Express chipset. It supports industry standard 64-bit wide DIMMs with synchronous SDRAM. This system supports maximum of 4 GB memory. Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here. The XPS 410 / Dimension 9200 was never tested with 8 GB memory so we are not sure if it would support 8 GB memory. Below is the table with detailed information.

The chipset in the XPS 410 is an INTEL 965 chipset having an 8 GB max memory addressing capacity and it does support re-mapping past that. HOWEVER, if you install 8 GB of physical RAM you will still have the hole between the 3 GB and 4 GB addresses because the chipset doesn't have excess address space to perform the re-mapping and uses this space for VIDEO RAM I/O etc.
Bios update to the latest is recommended when trying more ram than the manufacturer specs.
