Inspiron w/Windows 8 and Dell 966 printer

Just purchased my husband a new Inspiron laptop - but cannot get our older Photo 966 printer to instalel. The driver installs but then when I connect the printer to install it says driver unavailable.  I am not a techie by any means and not sure what my options might be.

ktrauger,

Windows 8 is not compatible with this printert but this may work, but I cannot guarantee this.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 8 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 8 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

Dell 966 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications. If no virus program was installed, then you have Windows Defender. The instructions should be similar to Microsoft Essentials. Allow Printer past Microsoft Essentials

Let me know what happens.

Hi, I have a similar issue getting the Dell 966 printer to work with our new Inspiron laptop with windows 8 (after downloading the 64 bit driver and using USB connection). No luck so far after trying the steps above. The printer is able to work with another desktop with windows 7. Any other idea to try and troubleshoot?

thanks,

Susan

Susan,

Are you trying to use a host computer to print from another computer?

Does this printer have a wireless adapter?

Hi Rick,

I am just trying to print a doc with template straight from the laptop, as reading them from the desktop (the one with windows 7 and can print) loses the formatting of the doc.

I would have to get a wireless adapter if it helps. I also thought of making the printer wireless to see if helps. But the laptop would still need to connect/communicate with the 966 printer, right? Just afraid that we would run into the driver download issue, even though we run the setup..exe in compatibility mode.

Thanks,
Susan

Susan,

Strange that the one computer is having issues. I knew the Dell 966 printer may have wireless, that is why I asked. They usually have an antenna on the back of the pritner is there is a wireless card installed.

Wonder if something installed incorrectly on the new system. When a printer does not install or has some type of problem, sometimes a Windows file becomes corrupt or missing. Do you have a lot of files and folders on it? How about software? If not, I would consider using the factory image and put the computer back to factory. Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings
