Changing the SNMP sysName on iDRAC7 systems

Hi,

we have 5 x M1000e chassis management controllers, each with 16 x M620 blades.

I have enabled/configured SNMP on all the iDRAC systems.

When I query the systems, the sysName is reported as either 'RAC_ ' or 'Dell Rack System - '.

Is it possible to change this to something more meaningful and, if so, how?

Thanks,

Michael.

Is your query looking at the name in DNS?

You can use racadm commands to configure the name a DRAC will respond with and register in DNS.

racadm config -g cfgLanNetworking -o cfgDNSDomainName (insert name)

There is another parameter to adjust to make it work, see page 115.

Thanks for the quick response.

We don't allow devices to autoregister in DNS but we do have forward and reverse entries in DNS for the DRAC.

If I run 'racadm -r -u -p getconfig -g cfgLanNetworking '  the output shows that cfgDNSRacName contains a valid hostname and cfgDNSDomainName contains the domain part of the FQDN. Also, the cfgDNSServer* entries point to valid DNS servers. All of these values were set via the DRAC gui.

However, when I run snmpget to query the value of sysName.0, the DRAC still returns a strring like RAC_ .

So, my question is:

Is it possible to configure the DRAC so that when it gets an SNMP query for sysName.0, it returns something that I have configured?

Also, the link to the reference guide given above doesn't work. I found the document at:

ok, got the answer, been digging since last week. Go ahead and set the DNS name, then restart the drac, either from the web page, or if omsa is installed, by doing racadm racreset, the SNMP name will change when the drac resets. I tested it here

that did not work .. by setting the DNS name and resetting idrac.
