Inspiron 660 has no DVI output so high quality (ie) ultrasharp monitors won't work properly. SOLUTION
My Dimension 660 Win7 with I5 processor arrived two days ago and I was STUNNED that there was no DVI output. Only VGA (analog) and HDMI.
My DELL ultrasharp 2208WFP ($350 in 2008) monitor put out an almost HD qualtiy display when connected through my old Inspiron 530's DVI output. That monitor has no HDMI input however.
I connected my Monitor to the VGA output and the display on the screen was horrible as you can imagine.
I called Dell support TWICE and could not get a straight answer from either technician ...... I am not sure they could even understand the problem. I google searched it and couldn't find a solution on point.
I went up to radioshack and neither of the two sales people had an answer.
Then I studied the situation a bit and realized ......... If only they made an adapter with female DVI and male HDMI to plug into the HDMI slot on the computer ........ that would solve the problem.
So .. I drove back to the same radioshack that said they had no solution ...... and low and behold ....... Adapter with female DVI and Male HDMI.
Monitor display is now fantastic.
I am posting this to help others with this problem since DELL tech support was virtually useless for me TWICE.

HDMI is the same as DVI. Buy a HDMI to DVI cable for about $7 at Amazon or another online retailer and you will get the highest quality picture your video card will support.

Most PC components are made offshore or nearshore. That includes Apple, which contracts much of its manufacturing to Foxconn in China.
If you want a DVI port, you can buy a third party video card like a Sapphire 6450 for $40 or so.

Yes ........ you are correct. I paid the usual ripoff price for the adapter at Radioshack $30. I would say I feel like an idiot ..... but how come two different DELL techs couldn't help me.. Probably because I could tell neither of them could speak English.

For the record, when you need to contact Dell for technical help, use the CHAT function instead of the phone. All educated Indians are proficient in English, but have problems with speech clarity. They do well in typed communication.

You're seeing this on third-party mainboards, too. I suppose it costs more and adds complexity to provide the extra connector, so more and more, it's being omitted.

The D660 video upgrade option Nvidia GT 620 has VGA, HDMI and DVI. As stated earlier, a DVI to HDMI adaptor is about $4 from Amazon. Many HD monitors do not have HDMI connections and many computers do not have DVI. Go figure!!!

I just hope that the same problem I had could be resolved by making the right google search. In the end what we have learned is that DELL won't warn you that your high end monitor won't work with current DELL configuation, even though they had that information and it would just take a $10 upgrade in cable.

There is no difference in picture quality between DVI and HDMI. Both are DIGITAL, so the same signals go to the monitor. HDMI also supplies audio so you don't need the extra audio cables.

I have found this out as well. My problem is, I bought the adapter and the video goes black and will occasionally flash on. Works fine on VGA cable.

when you say "works fine" with VGA adapter ....... are you sure you were operating optimally before with respect to screen resolution ??????? Depends on your monitor, but not being able to get digital output on a digital monitor means your screen resolution cannot be as high as is the optimal factory settin. On VGA, my screen resolution was so bad, the icons were gigantic and your had to use the "side scroll" tab to view a page, that is ........ at any one time, you could only view about 70% of a website at one time.

By VGA I'm referring to the standard blue cable. My monitor is a Full HD Viewsonic. 2 inputs "VGA" and DVI. It allows use of 2 computers. I allowed to computer to setup video resolution.

I bought a Dell 660 and have a Dell 30" 2560 x 1600 resolution monitor with DVI only that was used with my old XPS 600 which broke down because of a failed proprietor motherboard. Got the HDMI to DVI adapter and ended up with a max 1280 resolution which is horrible on the 30" ultra sharp. So now I need to get a compatible DUAL LINK graphic card and DVI-I cable. I work with large high res photo images and no games so I don't need a max card. Found one on Dell for $70 which I will order first week of April. Hopefully that works
out!
