Dell XPS 12 UltraBook Audio
I connect my Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook running Windows 8 into a Dell 2408W monitor's HDMI port using a mini display port to hdmi adapter, the one Dell sells. The display is just fine but the audio does not come through the HDMI port to the speakers connected to the 2408W monitor. The audio comes out of the XPS built in speakers.
I can connect my AppleTV to the 2408W monitors HDMI port and the audio from the AppleTV comes through the speakers connected tot the 2408W monitor just fine.
If I connect the Dell XPS 12 into a Panasonic flat panel TV's HDMI port, the audio comes from the TV just fine.
What am I missing?

As written earlier, I used the first one, no extra USB audio connection.
Cheers,

I've tried two without the the USB connector and neither one worked. I went to the connector that has the two pigtail, one for miniport and the other USB and it works. However I have heard others that have had success with just the mini to HDMI connector. Don't know why for some it works and others it doesn't. Dell tech says the mini doesn't support audio but I'm wondering if it has something to do with the TV the XPS12 is being connected to. Doesn't make sense but somewhere in here I read that for one person it worked fine on one TV but not another make TV.
Good luck!

I have Dell XPS 12 and couple Dell U2413, Audio works fine over DP.
U2413 don't have speakers but analog 3.5mm stereo out, which is connected to my 2-way amplifier.

I have the XPS12 9Q33. I purchased an Accell B086B-008B-2 and Mediabridge ULTRA Series HDMI Cable from Amazon. Both audio and video are passed when I connect the hdmi cable to my tv or into my stereo receiver.
The StarTech MDP2HDS active adapter did not work.

Thanks for sharing that. I have added your post and parts of Thistle3595's post to the HDMI Audio FAQ.
