Dell Inspiron M5010 battery in but not charging

We have a Dell Refurbished Inspiron M5010 for about a year. All of a sudden the battery is recognized but will not charge. It says it's plugged in and charging; but stays at 0%? Any suggestions?

Hi pgorney,

Based on the description the issue appears to be related to hardware. Try to disconnect the battery from the computer and power on the with just the AC adapter connected. If the computer works powers up, follow the below mentioned steps to troubleshoot:

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter and battery from the computer, then press the power button for 10-15 seconds to remove the residual power. 
  2. Power on the computer with only AC adapter connected to the computer and tap F2 key repeatedly at Dell logo to enter the BIOS. 
  3. Under Main Tab please check the AC adapter type (that is if it says 65W/90W or anything else). 
  4. Power off the computer and unplug the AC adapter from the wall, and from the computer. 
  5. Ensure that the AC adapter is unplugged long enough for the LED on the AC Adapter to go off. 
  6. Connect the adapter and the battery to the computer, and then power on the computer. 
  7. Check if the battery is getting charged.
  8. If issue persists, power off the computer and check if the battery is getting charged.

Please post the results.

I am having the same problem with my fiance's Inspiron M5010. I was getting the error message  "Warning the battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup utility". I've actually taken the AC adapter out and pressed the power button 10-15 seconds and everything worked fine. At least until I decided to flash the BIOS to ensure her system was up to date. I no longer am getting the error message but my battery is not being charged. Of course, it says "plugged in, not charging". Know of any solutions for this?

I am having the exact same problem with my Inspiron M5010. Well, the "plugged in, not charging" part anyways. My computer friends haven't been able to find any problems with it. Every time I plug it in the message pops up saying my power cord is the wrong kind, but it is the same one that came with my laptop.

Try another (or a new) Dell adapter.  If it solves the problem, you're set - replace the adapter.  If it doesn't, you have a power jack or mainboard problem.

It wasn't a hardware issue, I discovered. What I had to do was flash the BIOS again to an older version but in order to do it, you must have at least 10% battery life, which I didn't. So I had to create a Windows 98 bootable environment to boot to in order to force it. I simply made the bootable environment and put the BIOS version on the root of the drive (dag and drop). I then booted to the USB and typed in the "nameoffile.exe /forceit" and it worked perfectly fine afterward. I/she have had no problem since and it charges perfectly fine. Thank you for your time and help. It is greatly appreciated!

i have the same issue. i did all the steps, but my computer still isn't holding a charge.
