How to get out of safe mode in Windows 8
If you find yourself stuck in safe mode using Windows 8, the most common answer given is to restart and your system will go back to normal mode. If this does not work, it is most likely that the start in safe mode box in your boot configuration is checked. Here is how to quickly uncheck the box.
1. Using the microsoft window key in the bottom left portion of your keyboard, tab out of your start screen to your desktop.
2. In the desktop screen, you will notice there is no start button in the lower left corner. Even though there is no button, there is a hidden "poor man's" start menu. Placing your cursor in the very bottom left corner of your desktop, right click on that corner. It might take more than one click. A menu of sorts pops up. One of the options is the familiar "run"
3. Left click on run. When the box pops up ....type in msconfig then hit the enter key on your keyboard.
4. A system configuration box will pop up with several tabs including one that says "boot"
5. Select the boot tab and you will see a safe mode box that has a check mark in it.
6. Uncheck the safe mode box and hit the apply or ok button.
7. You will then see a restart button. Click it to restart your computer.
8. When your computer comes back up, sign in and you will now be in "normal mode"

Fascinating...If you can get to your desktop, then by definition you are not 'stuck in safe mode using Windows 8' are you? In other words, when you are 'stuck in safe mode' then you cannot get to your desktop, that is why you are 'stuck'.
I was in the same situation and restarting did not work. Holding the Shift key and selecting restart did get me to another menu with recovery options, but every option there also required you to enter your password (very smart Microsoft) and there was no option to exit safe mode.
The only thing that worked for me was to do the following:
1. Get your hands on a Windows 8 install CD
2. Boot from the CD and choose recovery options
3. Choose 'advanced'
4. Choose 'enter command prompt'
5. Enter 'cd c:\windows\system32' to go to the system32 folder on your system
6. Enter '
bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot'7. Reboot and you should be out of safe mode.

That won't work if you forgot your password. You can't get past the login screen.

I have tried all of those things. I am still rebooting in safe mode. The screen is black and the network icon has the ethernet icon with a red x by it. I press the Wireless button and nothing happens. I really can't understand it at all. What can I do? I have an HP, but also own a dell. I can't figure out how to do this. Something happened and my network went out so I restarted the computer. It booted in safe mode. Now when I try to restart it still comes up in safe mode.
Nothing is checked saying safe mode should be happening. I've done everything above.

Windows 10 is just same as 8.1 In case you discuss on Safe mode. In both the OS, System configuration works. If you need to know to come out from safe mode in the latest one read

I am stuck on Safe Mode and can't log in because I forgot my old Microsoft account password (even though I've reset it using my phone and have a new one now). By doing what you suggest will I still be able to keep all my files and programs that I currently have?

Thanks for your help. It worked well. My 2 year old DELL XPS 27 all in one just had a drive fail now. its messed up. warranty expired last month believe it or not! I just ordered a new one(same computer)
from Dell for $2100
