sm bus controller - optiplex gx620

I've got a yellow exclamation for the sm bus controller in the device manager. I've tried installing the chipset drivers.

Help appreciated.

What version of Windows? Are you using an account with Administrator privileges?

Did you get any error messages when you tried to install the chipset? You might try installing it again, after rebooting in Safe Mode. Then reboot normally after it's installed.

If that doesn't help and this just happened, a System Restore to latest date available when you know it was ok, may fix the problem. Personal files will be ok, but you will have to reinstall any software updates and hotfixes originally installed after the date used for the restore.

windows xp pro

No.

I'll try that next.

This is a new system. I just installed the os.

Thanks.

You might be able to get it straight from Intel's download site.

Intel had a scan to detect whether the intel drivers are current. This is what it found:

Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (Chipset INF)

Product Detected Intel® 6, 5, 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets

Current Version Installed 9.3.0.1026

This version is valid.

That's odd ... regarding the SM Bus driver, is there an error message associated with the yellow symbol?

If you just installed the OS, did you install Desktop System Software (System Utilities) as the very first driver after loading XP? That should have been installed, before the chipset.

This is the error message:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

Have you installed the service packs?

If not, you might consider installing those. Afterwards, reinstall the chipset drivers.

I didn't install the system utilities (yet). Didn't know they were necessary.

You can buy Windows 8 for $40 for today only. Otherwise, you may want to try reinstalling Windows XP and before you do, enter the Recovery Console on the Windows XP install disc and run the FIXMBR command to knock out any malware hooking the Master Boot Record.

SM Bus controller is CHIPSET Driver.  You have malware interfering with windows installer or some other issue.

Its definitely not rocket science to reinstall XP on a GX620.
