Black Screen issue in Inspiron N5050

I Have Dell Inspiron N5050 seried laptop with windows 7.The problem with my laptop is that the screen goes off even when I am working on it. Its like the system goes to sleep mode even when I am working and using it. Once the problem starts it happens like every one minute or so, or even in 30 seconds. No matter, I am typing or working on it, the screen goes black and I have to press a key or use mouse pad or something to bring it back. I checked my screensaver settings its set to 10 minutes.

I contacted Dell also and as usual they were of no help. They updated my video drivers and uninstalled and reinsntalled McCafee antivirus, performed all the system diagnostics they can and they could not detect the issue. Now, they want me to restore my system to factory settings and then see if it works. I am really not very keen on doing this as this is my work laptop. I will have to back up a lot of data and remove all the softwares. And they are not even confident if this will resolve the issue.

Is anyone else also having the same issue? Any idea what could b causing this issue and how can we resolve this?

Hi djeswani,

I can understand electronic devices can create confusion when they do not work the way they are designed for. Here are few things that we can try to fix this technical issue.

To prevent this from happening follow the below steps:

  1. Click Start button, click Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click Power Options.
  2. On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings for the plan that you want to change.
  3. On the Change settings for the plan page, click Change advanced power settings.
  4. On the Advance settings tab, expand Sleep, expand Allow Hybrid Sleep, and choose OFF.
  5. On the Advanced settings tab, expand Sleep, expand Allow wake timers, choose Disable for both when your computer is running on battery and when it's plugged in, and then click OK.
  6. On the Advanced settings tab, expand USB settings, under USB settings expand USB selective suspend settings, choose Disable.
  7. Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

Check if the above steps work and reply.

Hi caohope,

If the above steps do not work, uninstall and reinstall the video card driver of the system. Please follow the below mentioned steps.

  1. Click “Start”.
  2. Click “Control Panel” and select “Device Manager”.
  3. On the “Device Manager” window, expand “Display adapters”.
  4. Right click “Intel(R) HD Graphics” and click “Uninstall”.
  5. Ensure to check the box “Delete driver software for this device”.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the drivers.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Use the below links to download and save Intel HD Graphics:  http://dell.to/10GaKAc
  9. Click the link, enter the service tag of the computer and select the operating system from the dropdown and select the right Intel video card driver from the list and install it.
  10. Run the driver file for Intel HD Graphics, follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver and restart the computer when prompted.
  11. Check the functionality of the system

Please post the results.
