Dell Desktop Tower that supports 4 SATA 3TB hard drives. ??????
I have a Dell Precision Workstation 380 with WinXP 32 bit. I love it. I have it configured with 4 SATA HD (I had to make a minor modification), I need a second computer that will support four 3TB drives. I think I am looking for a 64 bit system, that way I can run either WinXP 64 or Win 7.
I am looking for a used tower that I can purchase from eBay or Dell used inventory with 3.0 + GHz and 4GB memory.
What older models meets my needs??????

Sorry I know I will have trouble booting from a 3TB drive. Should have read one 2tb, and three 3TB drives.

Precision 690 comes to mind but you would need a sata controller and 64 bit windows.

Thanks, I looked at the 690 but I noticed that it had only 3 SATA jacks. I am not sure what a SAS drive is. I found on the internet a cable that looks like it plugs into the SAS outlet on the motherboard on one end and into a SATA drive on the other end.
I this what you are talking about for a "sata controller" ???? Or do I need a sata controller PCI card ???

SAS is not the same as SATA. SATA or Serial ATA
SAS, or Serial Attached SCSI, is NOT the same. I am not aware of ANY desktops with SAS.

This is from the Precision 690 user manual
Your computer supports:
Up to four SAS (serial-attached SCSI) hard drives and one serial ATA (SATA) hard drive, or five SATA hard drives
Up to four CD/DVD drives (if no floppy drive, Media Card Reader, or hard drive is installed in a 5.25-inch bay)
One floppy drive or Media Card Reader
General Drive Installation Guidelines
When you install a drive, you connect two cables—a DC power cable from the power supply and a data cable—to the back of the drive. The other end of the
data cable will connect to either an expansion card or to the system board. Most connectors are keyed for correct insertion; that is, a notch or a missing pin on
one connector matches a tab or a filled-in hole on the other connector.
Power Cable Connectors
SATA and SAS hard drives should be connected to connectors labeled "HDD" on the system board, with the exception of a fifth SATA hard drive installed in a
5.25-inch drive bay, which much be connected to the SATA0 connector. Non-hard drive SATA devices should be attached to the connectors labeled SATA. IDE
CD/DVD drives should be connected to the connectors labeled "IDE."
HOWEVER, the photo of the motherboard only show 3 SATA connection ???????? (item 11 ) and
4 SAS connections item 14, 15, 16, 17
I am very confuse. ???????????

" Up to four SAS (serial-attached SCSI) hard drives " is an option that has a controller and special cables.
Something Like DELL - PERC 5I SAS RAID CONTROLLER. For the 690 the proper cable connects to the 5i and has 4 SAS connectors and you plug the SATA stye power into each cable head near the drive.
This product has been tested and validated on Dell systems to ensure it will work with your computer and is compatible with Dell Precision WorkStation 690. The cable is F3X1984-01M | Dell Part# : A1728666
