Issues with Inspiron 15R N5110 not shutting down or coming out of sleep/hibernate

My Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 will not shut down or come out of sleep/hibernate. When I shut it down it goes through to the "shutting down" screen then the screen goes black however the computer does not turn off. When I close the lid or manually put it in sleep or hibernate mode the screen does not come back on. The only way I can resolve this is to hold the power button until it turns off. Please help me!!

Hi Jhanslip,

I recommend to update the Video drivers on the computer.

Uninstall and reinstall the Video card drivers and check if the issue persists:

Uninstall:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System, click Hardware, and then click Device Manager.
  3. Click the PLUS SIGN to expand Display Adapters.
  4. Double-click the video adapter driver.
  5. On the Driver tab, click Uninstall. Check the box “Delete driver software for this device”, click ok and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall

Install:

  1. Visit the following website: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  2. Enter the Service tag of the computer in the box provided and click “Submit”.
  3. In the next page, click drop down arrow to select the Operating System which is installed in the computer.
  4. Under category “Video”, select the drivers accordingly and click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Video card drivers.

If the issue persists, update BIOS on the computer. Click on the link below to update BIOS on the computer:

http://dell.to/UmY8yD

  • During BIOS update verify that the computer is connected to an AC Adapter.
  • Disconnect any third party peripherals connected to the computer before performing BIOS update.
  • Do not turn off the computer during the BIOS update.
  • Do not restart the computer during the BIOS update.

Note: Plug your computer to a good, working wall jack before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to buy a new BIOS chip or buy a new motherboard.

Awaiting your response!

I don't know if this helps but when I put the computer in hibernate and close the lid I can hear the fan start up like it is running a program.

Hi Jhanslip,

Check if any external devices are connected. If any, disconnect the external devices and check if issue persists.

Also, follow below mentioned steps which can resolve the issue:

Change power management settings for a device:

  • To change power management settings for a device
  • Open Device Manager.
  • Double-click the type of device for which you want to change power management settings.
  • Right-click the specific device you want, and then click Properties.
  • On the Power Management tab, change the power management settings.

Notes:

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.

To open Device Manager, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Device Manager.

You can use the power management settings to specify that the operating system return from a low-power state to service an event. One example of the effect of doing so is that an incoming modem call will alert the system to service the call even if the system is in hibernation. You can also specify whether the operating system should turn off a particular device if it is not doing something, such as servicing a call.

The Power Management tab appears only for device drivers that support the power management standards, such as network adapters.

From the above picture ensure all the options are Unchecked.

Awaiting your response!

Hi anupjak,

Uninstall the Realtek LAN drivers from the system. Restart the unit and download the latest realtek drivers from the Dell site.

Driver Download page: http://dell.to/QjjZDA

(Key in the system service tag and the appropriate operating system do download the driver)

Also refer to the below thread for more information.

The same exact thing is happening to me all of a sudden since yesterday.  Did you figure out how to fix this problem, Jhanslip?
