Inspiron 15R SE 7520 video card not working after Windows 8.1 update

The internal graphics are Intel HD 4000 and the graphics card is a Radeon HD 7730M. After updating to Windows 8.1 almost everything worked, except it only uses the on-board Intel graphics. Now the resolution isn't right and parts of the Windows interface look rather poor in comparison.

What I've tried:

  • Uninstalling the video card drivers
  • Re-installing the Dell drivers for the video card
  • Installing the latest beta drivers directly from the AMD website
  • Disabling the on-board Intel graphics
  • Uninstalling the on-board Intel graphics

So now what?

....No you need Catalyst Control Centre to manage the card. To make sure games are using it. To set specific profiles for certain games. To have it run how you want. That's not acceptable.

And this question is not "answered", to the admins who marked it as such.

OK. Good luck with that. I know some games never worked without setting them to high performance in catalyst though.

No admins marked it as such, that would be me. I did a fresh install of Windows 8 with updates and then updated to 8.1. I used the drivers in the selected answer and it fixed the problems mentioned. Neverwinter Nights 2 loaded up as usual and the fuzziness went away. I have however since reverted back to 8 just to avoid any other problems, as I use this computer for work.

The best answer to this question would probably be to just stick with 8 for a few weeks or months until things with both the Dell drivers and other 8.1 issues get worked out. It's a lesson I thought I should have learned by now. Don't ever update Windows immediately when something is released on a production machine.

Hey there I had the same problem however some windows files also went wrong during the upgrade.

So I backed up all data, reinstalled Windows 8, did all required updates, upgraded to 8.1

And all is working beautifully albeit without the catalyst control centre, however both cards are working well, and I am now just going to wait for the new software.

The last time this happened was from windows 7 to windows 8.0, and i spent around 5 hours with dell, in the end a clean install was needed and they then used the windows 7 driver CD, in compatibility mode to install drivers and went on to tell me catalyst centre is optional to me.

** Also to test which and when each card was working i installed a trial of ARGUS MONITOR from CNET, and it tells me info and stats on GPU1, and GPU 2

Like the selected answer says:

"After installing the AMD & Intel HD4000 drivers for Win8.1  from the above site , the screen's fuzziness disappeared and Catalyst is working again!"

Catalyst loaded for me too after using the drivers and allowed me to choose high performance or power-saving for applications. Did you try the somewhat hidden drivers from the solution?

The solution worked for me.

In my case, i didnt have to uninstall the graphics devices. here is what happened:

First i tried to install this driver

Intel: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-se-7520?driverId=KK6CK

But i had a problem, the setup said my computer didnt have the requirements to install (or something like that). To solve this, i just extract the setup file to a folder and updated the Intel Graphics via Devices Manager (using the folder i extracted).

Then i installed the second driver

AMD: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-se-7520?driverId=9NNDW

Everything seemed perfect. No conflicts and Catalyst Control Center working fine.

When i opened StarCraft 2 to make a test, it was runinning at 2 fps, obviously something was wrong, the AMD card was not working. After spend hours trying to figure what was going on, i went to CCC and set everything to "energy reduction" and wipped all saved profiles. I just set one single file in "High Performance": StarCraft II.exe.

The problem was fixed. Now everything is working properly.

The question is, do you have to do that for every single game? Like, if you wanted to run Skyrim, would you have to delete Starcraft, wipe your saved profiles, and set Skyrim to high performance? The fact that you had to go through so much trouble is not a good sign. The AMD switchable graphics should "just work", and that's the issue I have with Dell. They need to update the drivers ASAP. The Windows 8.1 drivers people are using have been available for weeks, I remember using those same ones with the beta version. Dell needs to get on the ball and release new ones with the bugs fixed. I just feel like if I paid for switchable graphics, then they should work.

im trying to get best from radeon hd 7730m.

im tried lots of driver. modder leekm builds... modder leshcat builds.... im used some modder's enduro dx9 fix. this option adding something to catalyst control center and realy giving more fps for some... their modded drivers runs better from original amd release. but original amd relases not perfect.

old dell driver ( for win7 2013 dated but realy old amd driver ) very useless...

but i need fps stability. no shock fps slow down spikes. no fps ticsk. no animation click locks. no micro sluttering.

sample warthunder game: dx11 like mode always doing micro sluttering.

and last i found best stabile driver for it. fixed warthunder problem. games fps animation realy more stable.

im formatted my hdd. installed windows 8.1 from dvd.

microsoft windows update driver 13.152.1.1000                13.152.1.1-130910a-162613E-ATI

this is best stabile driver for me. and giving realy difference.

amd 7730m series have big driver problem. im found good solution with microsoft update driver.

I tried these and it did look like they were working...but....no game is using the AMD card even if the driver says it is. Most of my games were completely unplayable. I've done a refresh back to windows 8 and told windows update not to update either the AMD or the Intel driver. I'll wait until these are confirmed working properly and properly published on the dell driver page. Windows 8.1 doesn't look that different to windows 8 just cosmetic changes really can't see what all the fuss was about.

I can't see any of the DELL moderators helping in this thread with it having "This question is answered" written all over it, especially when it's NOT.

Windows 8.1 drivers now officially show up on the Inspiron 15R SE 7520 product page:

That's a start. It shows that Dell is at least listening to us. As long as the black screens are gone and games perform well, I will be satisfied. I'll probably upgrade to 8.1 in the next few days and let you know my experience. However, it should be noted that the drivers listed on that page are not new. They are the same ones that people posted from the FTP site, aka the 8.1 beta drivers.
