Dimension E520 has a blinking amber light

I've had my very trusty E520 since about 2007, and it's served me well through the years. However today I encountered something weird: the power button on the front was flashing a sort of amber colour. I did some searching and found it could be a problem with the PSU, but I did the paperclip test and the fans started and such. After this I assumed it wasn't a PSU problem, but the light still flashes. Any idea why?

An additional note, I moved the computer recently. Could this have shaken something out of place inside?

Any response would be great. Thanks.

First open the case and check all the power and data cables to all the drives and motherboard are properly connected, by removing, then reconnecting them, remove and reinstall the memory modules and video card if installed, to see if this makes a difference.

What is the reading of Diagnostic Lights on the front panel?

Are there any 'Beeps'?

The Diagnostic Codes and Owners Manual are here:

I've checked all connections and reinstalled the memory modules, still no difference.

I don't have any diagnostic lights on the front, and there are no beeps. Just a flashing power button.

The only 100% method of testing a PSU, is to install a known working power supply.

If you are certain, the power supply has not failed.

Remove all the PCI cards, the video card [if applicable], memory, all peripherals, disconnect the data and power cables to all the drives, check that the front panel cable is connected to motherboard, with nothing else connected to the system, reconnect the power cable and power the system on.

If there is no difference in the diagnostic lights, 'Beep' codes and/or the LED indication of the power button, it would appear that the motherboard has died and/or maybe the processor and the only method I know of checking a processor, is to install it a compatible working PC, or use a known working processor.

I just encountered a similar problem after replacing the psu on my dimension 5100. In my case it was due to one of the USB ports being bent after I moved the computer and a small piece fell out (causing the pins to contact each other). I was able to straighten it out and it's now working fine.

so I suggest you check all your USB ports and anything else which might have come loose.

hope this helps...
