Dell studio 1555 does not boot Diagnostics error 0146
Hi,
My Dell laptop can take up to 50 minutes to boot after repeatedly pushing the button for 60 to 90 seconds. No light beeps. Screen does not flicker.
On one successful boot I pressed F12 and the Diagnostics gave error 0146
Dell used to flash on start up that the battery is coming to the end and will have to be replaced.
Kindly guide me. I am not sure how much time it will take once I shut down this laptop.
I am running Windows Vista

Hi mydoctortells,
2000-0146 error is a hard drive error. I would suggest you to back up the data from the hard drive. I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the computer and then rerun the hardware diagnostics again. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS required onto the system and install it.

Hi Dr Ashok,
2000-0146 error again during the hardware diagnostics indicates hard drive failure. Please replace the hard drive. However as you have told me that laptop is not switching ON after the diagnostics. I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check if system switches ON.
1. Switch off the computer.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
3. Remove the battery from the computer.
4. Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
5. Then connect back all the peripherals and check if you are able to turn on the system.
Also, Please let me know the power button light status when you try to switch ON the system.

Hi Dr Ashok,
2000-0152 error indicates Optical drive incorrect status. I would suggest remove and replace the CD/DVD Drive in the system and rerun the diagnostics again.
2000-0142 error indicates hard drive failure. I would advise you to contact our support at 1800-425-0088 or 080-2510-7901 (Sun to Sat: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.)for out of warranty repairs.

Thank you Ravi,
I had to give the Dell laptop to the local shop.
As mentioned in the previous note the local technician even on asking repeatedly reiterated , "hard disk ka problem nahi hai". To further reassure us gave one month's guarantee.
The laptop is working fine at the moment. It is still showing error 0146. 0152 error had gone.
I wish to know if you can kindly tell me what the technician did or didn't do? I may have to replace the hard disk in future. Can you tell me which part of hard disk didn't function? Is there really no way to repair? As a lay man I believe (I may be wrong) the Dell experts are professional people with unbeatable technical knowledge and experience hence, would know which part or function is at fault and can guide me to do some more diagnostics if necessary to ascertain what is wrong and then instruct me to correct that function.
I will highly appreciate if you can throw some light on this (for me it is first experience, unlike you) issue. For the time being my problem appears to be solved. Data back up that you advised was very useful.
Best regards,
Dr. Ashok Koparday

Hi Dr.Ashok,
Sorry for the delayed response. 2000-0146 error is listed as ‘Hard Drive (d) – Self Test log contains previous errors’. It should mainly be a problem with hard drive, hard drive cable or the hard drive connector on the system board.
I would suggest you to Run Check Disk Repair from the Command Prompt. >C:\chkdsk/r/f
Also, you can run a full format on the Hard Drive and reinstall the operating system.
2000-0152 error is listed as ‘Optical Drive (d): - incorrect status: (x) (s)’
I would suggest you to disconnect and reconnect Optical Drive on the system.
Please let me know if this helps.
