How could I do it? Dell Poweredge T320 hardware monitoring?

Hello!

I am part time admin for a small business firm with 10 employees and one Dell T320 server. That server runs on VMWare ESXi 5.1 and a virtual SBS2011.

How can I establish some basic hardware monitoring for that Dell server? About health of hard disks, fans, board, etc.

Is there any free tool somewhere (from Dell or others) which could monitor it and send email on alert? A second workstation computer (Windows preferred) would be available to run this tool 24by7.

The monitoring application should be simple and easy to understand. A large ressource and knowledge intensive software would be here a full overkill and not possible due to constraints in man-power and budget.

Thank you very much for any useful information.

Kind regards

Klaus

Hello Klaus

The easiest way to do this would be through the iDRAC. The iDRAC can send email alerts from a local exchange server that you are probably running on that SBS2011 VM. This white paper has instructions for configuring the iDRAC to send email alerts:

If you have VCenter then you can also add our management plugin to it for monitoring the server. Monitoring/managing one server is free:

Thanks

If  using postfix  you   can edit  /etc/postfix/main.c   and  include the ip of iDRAC  in mynetworks;

mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 [::ffff:127.0.0.0]/104 [::1]/128 192.168.1.20
