Dell Venue 8 Pro not waking from standby mode

Twice now, when I leave my DV8P alone and it goes in to standby mode, I cannot wake it.  The first time I had this issue I was able to shut it down while in a plugged-in state and reboot it.

Both times, the battery was almost at full capacity.  This is not a battery issue.

To my knowledge, I've updated the latest drivers.

When I first got my DV8Pro I had no problem with the sleep/power button.  After installing windows updates and dell updates my DV8Pro would not wake from sleep.  I had to hold the power button down for at least 10 sec release the button and push it again and then it would boot back up.  I tried uninstalling all of the updates one at a time and that did not fix the problem.  Decided to start over and went to "Recovery options" and selected "Get Started"  from the "Remove everything and reinstall Windows"

My BIOS was updated as a step to try to cure the sleep issue and removing everything will not uninstall the BIOS update.  I mention this because maybe that helped my issue because the windows re-install was done with the latest BIOS. If you are having this issue maybe you would want to update the BIOS before the re-install of windows.  The BIOS I used is A04.  (if you want to check your BIOS in the search charm type "run". hit enter on the key board and in the box that opens type "msinfo32" and hit ok.  Look through the entries and you will find your BIOS version).  The latest BIOS for the DV8Pro is on the dell site under support.  I think I also updated the firmware update to the chip set before I re-installed windows.

During the re-install of windows I selected custom set up and chose not to allow windows to update automatically.  The next step was to install all the updates for the DV8Pro from the Dell web site.  After all the Dell updates were installed I went to the windows updates and installed each update one at a time manually. After each update I checked to see if the sleep problem recurred.  This process took a while and I am not sure what would happen if you just installed them all at once.  I do know that starting at the top of the list and installing each one individually did fix the problem.   I still have my updates set to not to automatically install and today there were 3 more updates.  I installed each of these one at a time and it still works.  Internet connection is also good, I checked that after each update also.  I have not changed to a new wifi yet.  All of this has been done at home.

Good look it was a very frustrating problem and I almost just returned it but I like the device so I gave it one good try to get it working.

Happened one time on mine.

Try playing with the windows power saver settings.  When I've had those problems on past computers I could usually fix it with that even if I had to tell it to never sleep.  That will mess up your battery life for awhile but if it's a firmware/bios problem Dell might be releasing a fix.  Usually from my experience, when that happens it's a hardware firmware/bios disagreement.

I am having the same problem and it just started? I think the only changes I made were the BIOS update  and reinstall of the WiFi drivers.  There are a lot of others on the TabletForum that are having this problem too.  Not being able to use the power button to awaken the system is the common complaint

My mother-in-law and I each have the Dell Venue 8 Pro.  We have both been experiencing what sounds like the same problem (or a similar one).

When using the preinstalled My Dell program (Checkup-->Bluescreen Troubleshooter), I have found an error on both machines referring to the pdc.sys file under %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers crashing with all -100 code.

I've been checking for new drivers almost daily.  I have the latest installed for everything.  I hope Dell fixes this ASAP.

Check under Windows update to see if you have the following 2 updates installed:

KB2887595, KB2902864

If you do, uninstall them manually.   They will cause problems with waking the tablet up.  You also need to put your tablet in notify you of update but don't auto install mode or windows will just reinstall them back.

I have had this problem from the first time i wanted to boot the 8 Pro. It immediately had a blank screen with only the back light turned on.

I have started a thread about this problem here:

Dell tech support told me to uninstall KB2883200 and KB2887595.  At first, this seemed to fix it.  It may be a fix for the wifi dropping issue (I haven't had that since, but it's only been a couple of hours).  Update: The wifi just dropped out again as well.

Unfortunately, when they call be tomorrow for a follow up, I'm going to have to tell them that the tablet is still not waking properly.  It must be something else.

He mentioned that the problem might be related to TPM (Trusted Platform Module).  By default, this is turned on, and so is Bitlocker.  He agreed that turning that off in the BIOS would be unfortunate since Bitlocker is turned on.  I thought I'd mention that though in case anyone is braver than I. :emotion-1:

A quick follow up in case it helps anyone:

When I first got my Venue 8 Pro, I did what many savvy PC users would do, I went to the website and downloaded the latest drivers.  I did that when my mother-in-law got her tablet, and I did it again when I got mine.  However, on mine I skipped a couple which I believed were release drivers.  A few days later, when my wifi was dropping out, I decided to install the wifi driver which was one I had skipped.  It occurred to me last night that this was when the failing to wake up problem began.  So, I rolled back the driver to the release one (dated 8/30/2013, it has a different version number than the one on Dell's support page).  Immediately, my failure to wake up / BSOD problems disappeared.  They have not returned.  Additionally, while the wifi does still go away sometimes, it is happening on a much less frequent basis.  In case anyone else is having these issues, I thought I would mention that this seems to have worked well for me.

Hmm... My WiFi has been acting up as well and I did enable auto updates.  (In retrospect, probably a bad idea.)  Perhaps this is the problem.

I've since refreshed my DV8Pro.  I'll manually install drivers now and refrain from installing the latest WiFi drivers.  Thanks SLASC and everyone else; Although an annoying problem, I'm glad to read I'm not the only one going through it.  I'll update with progress in a few days after living a little with it.

I solved the problem on mine by rolling back the Network/wifi adapter driver to version 3.7.2.34423 (8/30/2013) which shipped with the device via the Device Manager.  All other updates are installed, including the A04 firmware, and everything is working PERFECTLY now.

I too have had where the device does not intermittently wake from sleep/standby mode when pressing the power button.  It seems to be getting worse, or maybe as suggested some driver that I installed is the problem.

I just got back from travelling so I may try the refresh.. really don't have too much stuff installed on it yet, but so far I think if Windows can put in a notification center, I will go away from the iPad and keep this or upgrade to the venue 11.

udpate:  I have Bios A3 installed.  I have not updated to A04 yet, will do that now.  I already had disabled auto updates via Windows when I first got it.  The only thing that I did was upgrade the Bios to A03 when I got it.

Upgrading now to A04, will see how that works.

One more brief update.. the A04 fixes lists: 5. Upgrade embedded controller firmware version for system will shut down when wake up from connected standby on low battery level

So maybe it will help.

I am still on that version, never upgraded it, never ran windows updates since getting the tablet, mainly just updated the firmware to A03.

Just started noticing this problem on this trip, had it happen 3x now.

There are some documented Windows 8.1 issues which cause this.  Various updates were supposed to fix it, but they never did until I rolled back the driver.  Perhaps you need to update?
