Dell inspiron N5010 8 beeps

Hi, I have à laptop dell inspiron N5010 Which is out of warranty. It crached while i was working on it. When i turned it on, a serial of 8 beeps appears, so i turned it off by pressing on the power key. When i turned it on again, it did work normaly. However, few minutes later it crached again and when i try to restart, it makes 8 beeps and it does not reboot at all. I checked the problem in the internet and it seems that the problem is related to the LCD. I tried to connect my tv to the laptop via the HDMI connecter but there is nothing in the external monitor. I also tried to launch the PIST procedure by holding down the D key while pressing the power key, but there was no colors in the screen neither in the external monitor. Can anyone tell me what is the problem and how can i fixe it? Thanks Rostom

Is it 7 or 8?  8 beeps means the LCD and or LCD cable is broken.

Hi Rostom,

Welcome to Dell Community Forum.

The computer might emit a series of beeps during start-up if the LCD cannot display errors or problems. The repetitive beep codes help the user troubleshoot problems with this computer.  As correctly mentioned by our esteemed Rockstar, Speedstep in his post above, 8 beeps on an Inspiron N5010 indicates LCD Failure.  You have also mentioned that when you connected an external monitor via HDMI,  you did not get any display on that as well. However, the system did work fine one time before crashing again.

If the LCD on the system does not show any display, here are some basic steps that you can perform:

  •  Remove the battery and AC Adapter from the laptop and press the power button down for about 10-15 seconds to release flea power.
  •  Power up the system and then press the F12 key during the boot process to get to the Boot Menu, if you are able to see the display.
  •  It may be necessary to repeatedly press the key during the start-up process.
  •  Use the up and down arrow keys to select on the menu and press the Enter key.

Or

  • Hold down the Fn (function) key
  • Power on the notebook
  • You should then see the Dell logo screen with the message 'Diagnostic boot selected' in the top corner.
  • You can then release the keys

You can also click on the link below for additional information on troubleshooting Common Issues with Video on Notebook LCD Screens:

While the LCD BIST test runs, the LCD is operating on its own, free of the video controller, which may be discrete (a video card) or on board (on the system board). The test allows you to distinguish an LCD panel problem from a problem with the controller. If the colors are displayed across the screen without a problem, then the issue is not with the LCD.

Please keep us posted on the results and let us know if  you have further queries. We would be happy to help.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Rostom,

Thank you for your reply.

Instead of Fn+F1, press only F1 when attempting to switch the display to the external display.  This step switches the video image to the next display option. The options include the integrated display, an external monitor, and both displays simultaneously. Did you make any hardware or software changes to your computer before this issue began?

Additionally,  please try to check and reseat the LCD cable on your Dell Inspiron N5010, only if you are comfortable doing so. Click on the link below, select your system type and model or enter your service tag to access the manual for your computer. Read the information in the "Before You Begin" section prior to removing any parts from your computer.

Hi Babita,

If i understand welĺ, the BIST test is performed by the LCD itself and it is not related to motherboard. Well, since when i hold the D key down while i turn on the laptop there is no color bars in the screen, that means that the problem is related to the lcd screen. But, even when i connect my TV via HDMI there is no display in the external monitor!

Please tell me if i have to press any keys (like fn+f1) to tranfer the dispay to the external monitor. I tried fn+f1 but there is no display on the TV!

Does that mean that both mothercard and lcd screen are dead?

Thanks

Hi,

I have the same problem with my Dell Inspiron N5010. I followed above two methods to check if the LCD is working or not. But nothing comes up on the screen. Is it the problem with LCD?

Before it gets completely crashed the scenario of coming lines on the screen happened 2 to 3 times. But later after some time it worked properly. Is there any other way to detect the issue.

Please let me know the issue.

Thanks,

E. Ramesh Babu
