PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

Hi,

We've inherited some 8024F and need to update to the latest firmware, part of this is the: dev cpldUpdate command, which unfortunately fails:

console#dev cpldUpdate
Unrecognized device
CPLD update exited with a return code of 0
error_address 180511510, exit_code 6, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

We've tried 5.1.0.1, 5.1.1.7 and 5.1.2.3 and all give the same result, which leaves us with cpld v3, when the instructions state that we *must* upgrade to v6.  Any help is gratefully received as we'd like to get these updated and keep using them.

Thanks,

Karl

Hi,

Sorry I should have said, yes it's been done via the serial console.  The rest of the firmware update works fine, it's just the cpld that doesn't.  It's been rebooted, it's been hard power cycled and left for a minute but nothing makes it work :/

Output of cpldTest is (Ignore the PSU, it isn't plugged in):

How are you connecting to the switch? The update should be done through a serial connection.

I would try re-downloading the file to make sure it is not corrupt. Are you using a USB flash drive for the update? I so maybe try a different model flash drive.

Was anything ever found out about this error? I am having the exact same problem and I can't find anybody at Dell who can assist.

I don't have an answer as to why this happens. But some suggestions are to re-download the firmware. install through a serial connection. disconnect all other devices from the switch. Try multiple times, waiting a minimum of 10 minutes in between each attempt.

I too have 2 8024F switches that gives exactly the same error message when I attempt to perform the cpldUpdate after updating the firmware.

Has anyone solved this, please?

We have the same Dell switches but cannot update our clpd with the same error.

Do have anyone a solution?

After the firmware update is done and the switch reboots, the switch may be functional but still completing some initialization processes. I have seen success in just letting the switch stay on for 10 minutes or so, letting it finish this initialization process, and then run # dev cpldUpdate. Please let me know if this does not work for you.

Not sure if this will work on your model but is worth a shot.  On the newer switches (e.g. 8100) running 6.1.x.x software, the command is not "dev cpldUpdate" but rather "update cpld".  As mentioned previously, the firmware will need to be a the latest before running this command, since it contains the cpld code.

I too have this same issue.  I've read this entire thread, and I've tried every single suggestion to no avail.  The latest version of firmware available is 5.1.10.1 from April 2016, and I get the same result.  I know the image is not corrupt, because after downloading it to the switch via TFTP, I uploaded it back to the server and did an MD5 checksum comparison and they are the same. I've tried power cycling, and waiting several minutes before doing "dev cpldUpdate".  I've even tried making sure all ports are shutdown before reboot, so that only the console is active.

Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing helps.  How do I get official help from Dell on this?  We are experiencing a strange issue with these switches flooding management traffic (sflow reports, ntp queries, ICMP echo replies, etc.) instead of switching it only to the proper destination port.  I really want to upgrade fully to the latest code before I throw up my hands.

Again, how do I get Dell's attention?  I've already applied for a service tag warranty extension but haven't heard anything back.

Thanks,

jcphipps

I'm also having this issue

console>dev cpldUpdate
Unrecognized device
CPLD update exited with a return code of 0
error_address 180558966, exit_code 6, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

And now the switch will only run 10g/b on all fiber ports not 1 g/b anymore - seems also that it will only run in half duplex.

Dell, what's the solution to this issue?

It's still happening on the most recent firmware update, and the release notes are pretty clear that the CPLD *must* be updated for the switch to function correctly.

I have tried everything - reinstalling the update, leaving the switch off, reloading the config - nothing works!

console#dev cpldUpdate

Unrecognized device

CPLD update exited with a return code of 0

error_address 180595718, exit_code 6, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

I too had this happen on a PC8024 this afternoon.   After many Googling sessions, and mostly out of frustration, I kept repeatedly running the "dev cpldUpdate" command on the switch.   Eventually, it kicked in a worked:

console>dev cpldUpdate
Unrecognized device
CPLD update exited with a return code of 0
error_address 180757574, exit_code 6, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

console>dev cpldUpdate
Unrecognized device
CPLD update exited with a return code of 0
error_address 399162207, exit_code 6, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

console>dev cpldUpdate

erasing MAXII UFM block...
erasing MAXII CFM block...

DONE
CPLD update exited with a return code of 0
error_address 399162207, exit_code 0, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

console>

I can't explain how or why, timing didn't seem to make any difference at all cold boot/warm boot, trying immediately and waiting a while.  I just kept at it and eventually it worked.  So my advice is to be persistent.

I'm having the same problem myself.

I just upgraded all of out Dell 8024F switch stacks (We have 4 stacks), but one switch in one stack will not take the cpld upgrade.

Since the switch is on cpld v3 I thought about going back to the firmwares that allow upgrades to v4 and then v5 instead of jumping straight to v6.  However, that is not possible.  The first firmware upgrade procedure that mentions cpld is A16.  That already uses cpld v6.  If you go to the prior version of firmware available (A14), there is no mention of upgrading the cpld firmware.  I presume that v3 is the first release that was publicly available.

So I'm at a loss unless someone has found a fix.  Its a little disappointing that Dell hasn't commented in this thread yet despite this issue existing for 8 years and with multiple people.

One thing I found from Googling all day about this issue... it seems this issue is always when doing cpld upgrades on systems with the below board type and board version.

Board Type : Campbell 24F
Board Version : 2
CPLD Revision : 3 (0x3)

I'm thinking these are unflashable due to a mistake on Dell's part.  I checked all of my other switches, and none of them have that board type and board version.
