XPS 13 Ubuntu 12.04 vs Dell Docking Station ?

Hi all.

I was wondering if someone would have been using Dell SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Docking Station, with XPS 13 running Ubuntu 12.04 (Sputnik / Developper Edition) ?

Compatibility information shows only "XPS 13 Classic" (which from my POV excludes Developper Edition / Sputnik).

Has someone some feedback of running this hardware configuration ?

BR.

Hi YLM,

I'm interested in this one too because my company just got me this hardware (both the said docking station and xps 13 dev edition). I guess we wait and see what comes of it.

Greetings

I'd be interested in an answer to this too.  I've just ordered my machine but held off ordering the docking unit until there was a definitive answer to this question.

Bought it in december with a new XPS 13 with DELL 12.04 :

  • Audio (mic & spk) not working
  • HDMI not working
  • Network : speed OK but downgrade to 4 Mbps sometimes  = I use WiFi
  • USB : OK

So I use it as USB replicator... I'm very disappointed...

I'm installing 13.10 so I will tell you if there's solved issues with this dsitro.

Dell's Docking Station uses display link usb 3.0 for the external monitor, not yet supported under linux. For the audio, I don't know actually (but you can plug directly on your dell for headphones).

You can sign https://www.change.org/petitions/displaylink-support-linux-with-dl-3000-series-chips if you want to ask display link to make some drivers for linux.

I signed to the petition but look that not too much people is asking for it. Anyway I want to notify my personal interest on have that dock station working fully operational under linux, I suppose that is my fault for buy it before check that detail but I just did not expected it. On Ubuntu 14.04 works as reported by  NOVACERT-CPZ (ethernet yet not checked).

I was more than a little miffed to discover after the fact that only Windows and (some versions) of MacOS are supported by the chipset manufacturer (DisplayLink) for the Dell Super Speed USB 3.0.

When I was purchasing my XPS-13 Developer Edition the Dell web site RECOMMENDED this device for the multi-monitor support.   Ugh.  There wasn't even any fine-print disclaimers; a careful check of the compatibility list on Dell's page for the docking station clearly lists the XPS-13 with no OS caveats, and the website system builder was all too happy to add this $179 item to my invoice.

Now I'm walking through the time-wasting Dell return process because it looks like DisplayLink will *never* release chipset drivers for this linux distros.  And I still don't even have remedial multi-monitor support for a 'developer' machine.  Sigh.

Did you try this yet? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DisplayLink

I'm receiving one of these hubs/docking stations with my new work laptop in the next few days and will see if I can get this sorted with my current dual screen setup.

It seems it's a good idea to upgrade to the latest linux kernel (3.17) which I've already done to address the white noise and wireless stability issues.

I have a Latitude E7240 for work and the Dell dock that came with that didn't work with the 12.04 install we use (assuming the same issue).  I was underwhelmed by the hardware on the Latitude so I purchased my own XPS 12 and will be trying to get a dock working on that. Work only approves a custom image of 12.04 so I don't know how much luck I'll have but I will update if I get anywhere with it.

Thanks for this info.

But in between, and to "solve" the lack of support from DisplayLink, i had to go with Asus Varidrive & specific MiniPort to HDMI adapter (configuration running OK under 12.04 and 14.04)

The Asus Varidrive uses the same DisplayLink chip as our USB 3.0 docks...

Just tested, it's working with my Dell D300 Docking Station with a Sony SDM-HS93 \o/ However, a processus called DisplayLinkMana is taking between 15% and 50% of CPU on my i7 3537U (not last generation, but still). It's more often at 15% though.

It seems to work flawlessly, but there might be some optimization work to do by DisplayLink I guess.

I run into the same issue with CPU. It usually isn't too bad and I've found restarting my machine (could just restart the process) will resolve the issue. I power one monitor via the mini-display port on my XPS12 the other through the D3000 dock.  I have used 3 external monitors but find more issues arise when trying to have DisplayLink power 2 USB  monitors. Hopefully that will be resolved as driver advancements progress.
