Configuring Inter Vlan Routing to Access PowerConnect 2724 Web Management Interface

To route between VLANs you need a device that can handle layer 3, with the 2724 only being a layer 2 device it won’t route between them on its own. Depending on your router you may be able to configure port forwarding on your router to tell requests from the other VLANs to connect to the management IP. When you connected the two VLANs together with a cable did you set them to trunk mode to transmit tagged frames or were they sending untagged traffic.

They were set to send - out untagged traffic.  I believe for the Dell power connect 2724 you are unable to set tagged ports for vlan one.

The main router I have is a consumer wireless one.   A Linksys EA6400.   I do have a old wrt54g with dd-wrt flashed on it,  which I was trying to use to route traffic from vlan eight to vlan one.  I was able to access the Web management interface  from vlan eight but experienced the same problem which appears to be a broadcast storm or loop which results to a completely unresponsive network.  

Yes doing that will create a broadcast loop, to communicate between VLANs you need a layer 3 switch.

I'll give it another try, if not I guess I'm pretty much stuck using just a dedicated laptop to configure the switch.  But thank you again for your help.  One more question though, do you know any good resources or links regarding inter vlan routing? I not exactly sure the steps on configuring it or what type of commercial routers really support it.  Any affordable enterprise/commercial devices you would recommend that might be able to rout between the two vlans?

The dd-wrt router might be able to do vlan routing so that the management ip address could be accessed from any vlan. The switch doesn’t support spanning tree protocol, which is what would prevent broadcast loops, and isn’t designed for the VLANs to be able to communicate.

Thank you for your help, but do you think I would be able to use a standalone DD-WRT router to achieve inter vlan routing?  Is there a way to connect a route from a physical port on vlan-8 to a DD-WRT router  then to a physical port on vlan-1 without creating a broadcast loop or storm?

Just curious how do most IT professional access the Web Management Interface when setting up Vlans on a Dell PowerConnect 2724 switch?

We don't have anything that is not expensive that will do it.

Most have another layer 3 switch in the network that handles the intervlan routing and the ones that I have seen that don’t use some remote desktop software to remote into a computer on VLAN 1 and use that to access the GUI.

Hi Josh really appreciate all the help.  For the ones that use a remote desktop software to a computer connected to vlan-one, how do they access that computer?  How do they manage to get a connection from outside vlan-one to a computer inside vlan-one?

Usually with port forwarding on the router, so that all requests to the port the remote session get forwarded to that IP address.
