xps 8500 won't turn on, not psu problem
xps 8500 shipped on 1/18/13 so only a little over 1 yr old. won't turn on, checked psu and thats fine. narrowed it down to mobo or power button module. would like to try to bypass the module by jumping pins on mobo, problem is i cant find any pinouts for either mobo or power button. Any help would be greatly appreciated since comp is barely over yr old and can't afford new one right now. Called Dell but no help there cause warranty ran out, which took them 5 tranfers and 45 mins to tell me that :)

Sounding like the motherboard failed if no beeps when you boot with no RAM installed.

DOH! i did forget to change jumper back to original pins. When i did psu light went back to previous state: on when plugged in but goes out when power button is pressed
Did that compromise the test? should i try it again?

Probably not.
Motherboard or CPU failiure is my guess...

I am having the same problem. Green light @ PSU, Amber on Mobo. No power on with switch. This seems to be happening quite a bit. Any updates on a fix for this?

Kudos to RoHe. Step #1 (check all USB ports for damage, eg mishapen or bent contacts) solved my problem!
My XPS 400 desktop had fallen over and then would not turn on. The light on the power button flashed briefly when I pushed the button, but nothing came on--no fan, no boot, nada. I Googled around and found absurd suggestions like system restore (how would you do that with a dead computer anyway?) Then I found this thread and sure enough, one of the USB sockets on the front of the PC had mangled pins. Guess whatever cord that was plugged into it when the PC fell must have pulled out sideways and damaged the socket. I took a paperclip and bent the pins so they weren't shorting against the sides of the socket and the PC is back in service.

Glad that solved the problem. But next time, please use something NON-metallic like a toothpick rather than a paperclip so you don't risk making things even worse.

For anyone else coming across the thread.. I had the same issue, I replaced the mobo didn't work. I replaced the Power Button Module, WORKED! Everything came back on. This is the power button on the top of the box. I believe this is a design issue as the power button is on top of the case. I was cleaning my machine and some windex must have got in there and because the switch faces up, the liquid must have zapped the switch!

This issue may caused by the BIOS or the windows system. I think you need to re-install them correctly

Where did you get the XPS 8500 Power Button ?? I have XPS 8500 purchased on 2012 and it is no longer showing the blue LED indicating that the computer is on. The computer will display the orange LED .
This is my wife's computer and she has indicated that it use to have a blue color when the system was on and orange when the system entered hibernation.
