Inspiron 15 7537 • Battery Plugged In, Not Charging

I purchased an Inspiron 15 7537 four weeks ago. This afternoon, I noticed some odd behaviour with my laptop's battery notification icon in the taskbar ~

Scenario 1

When laptop is NOT plugged in ~
• Taskbar notification on mouseover says "73% remaining"
• Icon shows battery meter with slight drop in usage
• While I am using the unplugged laptop, the battery meter does not drop from 73%

Scenario 2(a)

When laptop is first plugged in ~
• Taskbar notification on mouseover says "No battery is detected"
• Icon shows a dimmed battery, plug on the left, and a red X

Scenario 2(b)

Approx. 60-90 seconds after laptop has been plugged in ~
• Taskbar notification on mouseover changes to  "73% available (plugged in, not charging)"
• Icon shows regular battery with a plug on the left side with slight drop in usage

Given these three ambiguous notifications, I don't know if it's my battery that is not working as it should or the notifications icon is on the fritz.

All three scenarios occur regardless of whether the AC adapter is plugged directly into the wall or into a power bar/surge protector

I am using the AC adapter that came with the laptop

The LED on/off light is lit in both Scenario 2(a) and 2(b)

I have not removed the battery and reseated it (involves removing four screws and entire bottom panel and, unless push comes to shove, I'm not comfortable doing this)

I have not checked the BIOS for unusual AC adapter messages (as I have read others have done by pressing F3 during the Dell logo display ~ again, not in my comfort zone, but would do so if I had to)

For what this info is worth, I'm using Windows 8.1 and the default Dell power plan. This is what I get after my laptop has been plugged in and in constant use for nine hours ~

Yes, I am aware my laptop is covered for one year, however, I'm hoping for an easy answer or explanation that doesn't involve me having to send a four-week old laptop to Dell Canada for parts replacement.

Any and all advice and insight is appreciated. Thank you.

UPDATE • Since I opened this thread 22 hours ago, there was no change in my battery meter notifications until I decided to take a look at the BIOS. Pressing F2 or F3 during a restart when the Dell logo was displayed did nothing but adjust my volume settings, so I entered the BIOS through Windows 8.1 PC settings option.

Under "Battery Health" the info said "This battery is performing normally" so I exited without saving any changes (I didn't make any changes, but this seemed the best exit strategy to use given my options).

Now the battery meter notification says I have 31% available (plugged in, not charging).

[Shaking my head]

Thoughts anyone ??

Deanna475,

I will send you a friend request shortly so I can get your information on the notebook.  I can think of a couple things that could be causing this, from the battery or AC adapter being defective, or the battery utility being corrupted.  You mentioned it previously, but when you where in the BIOS did you notice if adapter warnings was turned on or not.  If they are disabled, go ahead and enable them and save changes.  Do you get any adapter warnings when you restart the notebook?

Hello Terry and thank you for your reply. To answer your question, no, I did not see any reference made whatsoever about the AC adaptor. Windows 8.1 is a whole different o/s to me. I used to press F1 or ESC during a restart and access the BIOS; my online Inspiron 15 7537 manual told me to press F2 while the Dell logo was displayed but that didn't work, so I used the Windows 8.1 PC Settings option and entered the UEFI Firmware settings, which I thought was the same as the BIOS (??)

Further, in battery meter, there is also the message "your battery is performing naturally"!

Hi , I'm having a similar problem with the battery on my Inspiron 17 3737 laptop. When plugged in to the power supply I get the message "7% available (plugged in, not charging)". When I remove the cable from the laptop and reconnect, it shows the battery recharging for about 20 seconds and then it reverts to the non-charge state. When I go to power options (battery meter), it gives the message "battery charging disabled". Further the red battery light is on whenever the power cable in connected. Is there a means of disabling the charging mode which I may have activated by mistake or is this likely a fault?

Thanks, Mike

Try downloading and installing the latest version of the BIOS. It worked for me. See Dell Article 266440.

The above article says: If the AC adapter is not recognized in the BIOS, the battery charging circuit is disabled by default. (The system doesn’t know if there is sufficient power available to run the system and charge the battery.)

I had a similar problem of battery not charging even though my power supply was plugged in.

On battery check, the recommendation was to use Power Save setting.  I changed from Dell recommended

to Power Save.  I also twisted the adapter a little bit.  Upon restart the littlebattery icon says plugged in

and charging.

This makes me a little less likely to unplug and use battery though if the adapter is that sensitive.

I have the same problem. My Inspiron 15 7357 I7 is only 3 months old. It says (battery at 0%. Plugged in, not charging.)

My laptop was dead this morning & wouldn't even turn on. We tried my daughters laptop charger and at least I can use it now. Can't call Dell til Monday. :( not a happy customer.

Try downloading and installing the latest version of the BIOS. It worked for me. See Dell Article 266440 which says that if the system doesn't recognize the adapter, battery charging will be disabled.  When the BIOS is updated the problem is solved.  The problem occurred after I downloaded Windows 8.1.

you can solve the problem much simpler

Solved.

I got assistance from tech help at Dell. They talked me though a bunch of tests on the laptop. The issue was that part of my Dell charger was needing replaced.

I had borrowed my daughters charger to use my laptop but it wasn't powerful enough to charge it up. The Dell charger arrived through the post & everything's fine. Not having any problems at all.

I have the same problem but I can't install the latest BIOS because it requires the battery level to be at least 10% (and I'm at zero). Also, I have sent the computer into Dell as it is only a few months old, they sent it back with the same problem. they said they replaced the battery. now I am suppose to send it back to dell again.

I've tried using a different charger with the laptop, no change. Any ideas?

I have the same problem I have found out what the issue is it's not hardware related.  Something in the Dell BIOS is messed up and needs fixed by Dell.  There is a setting in the BIOS that does not stick when changed so you have to do it each time but its simple.  When powering up hit F2 to go into the BIOS setup the go to the Advanced tab.  There is setting called battery charging mode or something to that effect.  Highlight that option hit Standard and then hit F10 to exit and save.  Once started you battery will be charging, this will need to be performed during each boot up until the come out with a BIOS update that fixes this issue.  Even if you see Standard upon reboot change to another option back to standard and then F10 close and save.  This will work every time hopefully Dell figures this out and fixes the BIOS and quits wasting money on changing hardware that will not fix the issue.  I had 3 onsite techs come out change the charger 3 times and the motherboard 2 times each time it reverted back to "plugged in, not charging".  Hope this helps everyone out for the meantime until there is a permanent fix.
