Optiplex 780 processor upgrade

Hi all,

i have recently picked up an optiplex 780 SFF.

having read around I have seen that with a quick mod a quad core Xeon can fit into an LGA 775 socket.

this works out a lot cheaper than say a q9650 but still offering a lot of power.

would I be able to put a quad xeon into my optiplex 780 SFF with the socket mod?

what else would people recommend as it currently has an e5500 in it.

thanks

How'd you make out.  I'd just go with the maximum quad core - or a step below for economy sake.  These Optiplex's can be fairly snobby about hardware upgrades.  I did go from 8gb to 16gb and a small SSD and it made a big diff on a 3.16 duo...

do not know if anyone is still reading these 780 posts but the q45 chipset as per intel's web site states thet it is not compatable with x series processors not the qx or xeon due to overclockability and power consumption issues. only the q series. or E, but thats not an upgrade. the best processor from my research that will work in the oc27v v board is the q9650. and the ram issues  the dell SNP531R8C/4G works great in mine. new on ebay for about 40 bucks for two 4 gig sticks. I don't see it for sale on the Dell web site. hard to find anything on the 780 that is helpful.  must be the BTX
