Dell Inspiron 5000 Model 5545. Cannot make Windows System Image Backup with Windows 8.1.

When I go into the Control Panel and try to make system image backup on external hard drive get message saying backup failure.  Have tried several times.  External backup works fine for other things. Anybody able to do this?

Hi DMORE147, when I search "Windows 8.1 System Image Backup" on answers.microsoft.com there are literally 10 pages of discussions about this functionality.  Some of the reasons listed "why" it is not working are:  (just on the first page..)

...unsupported "version of the file format".

...(error 0x80780119)

...(error 0x80040154) (when attempting to a DVD)

...(error 0x80780119)

...(error 0x8078012D and 0x8007045D)

So it looks as though (to me) this functionality has unresolved issues.  Are you comfortable providing any further details of 'error' codes or going in to the "Event Viewer" and checking the Windows' log files for "Event ID:" codes?

Here is a Dell Knowledge Base article also:

Error Message:

Backup failed. There was a failure while compacting the virtual hard disk on the backup location. (Ox80780151).

Also get: Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (no code noted).

Is it because Dell has their own Backup and Recovery program which may interfere with the Windows process?

Hello Dmorse147, When I perform a targeted search using the exact criteria: ["0x80780151" sites:microsoft.com], I find there are only 36 discussion threads referring to this issue.  This is a much more narrowly defined results set than yesterday's search results!  Thank you for providing the additional information on the exact error code, which by the way always starts with a "0" (zero) not an "O" (oh).

In one of the search results postings I just reviewed, the User is on a Surface Pro with Windows 8.1 and he has not resolved it.

My suspicion is that the firmware of the external hard drive is having a "function" called on it that has not been fully tested; given the relative "youth" of Windows 8.1 this seems likely to me.  Welcome to the 'bleeding edge' of technology, Sir!  Have you tried making the System Backup on multiple devices?

Also, *maybe* check the external backup media manufacturer's website and see if there are any reports of 'known issues' with the device or a firmware flash update to be applied.  NOTE:  Use a good deal of caution with firmware updates!  These typically cannot have the power interrupted while being applied to a device - so have it on a battery/U.P.S. backed power source, and also consider if you flash it "up" from a version such as '1.0.0a' to '1.0.2', you may want to see if a corresponding 'Flash utility' exists for flashing it back "down" to '1.0.0a' before doing anything!
