Radeon 6770 HD (Dell OEM) driver reintall

I am having some BSOD issues which point to an unspecified hardware error on my Dell Studio XPS 9100. I would like to reinstall the driver for the graphics card (Dell OEM Radeon 6770 HD.) I see that the Dell Support site lists a driver with a date that is older than the driver that Windows wants to retrieve. Should I reinstall the driver ONLY from the Dell Support site, or can I use the driver and processes on the site of the vendor (AMD)?

The AMD Catalyst 14 Omega Driver works fine.

I would install Directx JUNE 2010 before and after the driver installs.

Update on this issue:

I suspect that the Windows-update-suggested driver for this card (ATI Radeon HD 6770 was the root of the problem.) After uninstalling that driver, I retrieved (once again) the Dell-suggested driver for the Radeon HD 6700 Series and installed it. Upon reboot, I declined the Windows update for a new driver and then also "hid" it from future update suggestions so that my system will not install it. These steps were done on 2/1/2015, and to date (3/4/2015) the problem has not reoccurred. The Dell-suggested driver (from the Dell support page for my system) is driver version 8.850.0.0, dated 4/19/2011. The Windows suggested driver is version 8.920.0.0, dated 11/9/2011.

Though I ordered a replacement graphics card for my system (the original ATI Radeon HD 6770 was apparently no longer available, and Dell indicates that the Visiontek Radeon HD 6670 is compatible), the new card was not installed. I hope I do not need it.

There are large numbers of reports of hiccups or BSOD failures associated with the ATI Radeon HD 6700, including failures of those installed on Dell XPS 9100s like mine.  After repeated but sporadic failures, I think I've finally solved the problem as follows.  I recommend doing all 3 of the steps below:

1.  Open the case (disconnecting power supply and connections first, of course) and carefully clean all dust out of the system.  I blew it out using compressed air and carefully picking out any dust bunnies I could see.  Dust can interfere with proper fan cooling operations and cause problems.

2.  Reassemble the case and at restart, reset the system BIOS to the factory defaults (hit F2 during boot-up and follow prompts).

3.  Make sure you have the most up-to-date drivers installed for the 6770 HD.  Even if you have checked them before, recheck as it appears there are new drivers as of summer 2015.

After completing all 3 steps above, I have (so far at least) seen no recurrence of the BSOD caused by the Radeon 6770 HD.  It may simply be the driver update, but since the first 2 steps are easy enough and it's wise to keep your case interior clean, you might as well do all 3.

Good luck!
