Precision T3500 CPU upgrade to X5650 - help needed
I current have posession of a Dell Precision WorkStation T3500
Currently running well on a Xeon W3520
I recently obtained a Xeon X5650
Upon swapping the cpu I get error code PB7 "BIOS not excecution"
In display terms "amber power light and lights 2,3 & 4 flashing"
I have the XPDFK motherboard and the factory 12gb ram DDR3 1333 installed.
I'm attempting to determine if this is a compatibility issue, dead CPU, or motherboard problem.
I should also note that I have installed the original chip again, and I'm using the very same machine to wrote this post. This leads me to believe that I have not damaged the socket in the process.
I'd love to go 6 core, but if that simply isn't possible on this motherboard I'd be happy with quad.
Any assistance or hints would be helpful.

With T3500 being a single CPU socket machine, single socket Xeons are generally less expensive per performance than Xeon processors that supports dual socket configurations (like X5600 series).
For 6 core processors, W3670, W3680 or W3690 are single socket CPUs with similar performance (in single CPU mode) to X5670, X5675, X5680 and X5690, but are generally less expensive, or about the same price for better performance.
W3670 3.2 GHz 6 core are going for about $95 on ebay right now. W3690 3.46 GHz 6 core around $195.
These should be faster than a 2.93 GHz X5670. TDP of X5670 is lower, though (95W vs. 130W) - not sure if that matters - may require a cooling upgrade.
That said, seems X5670 in 9KPNV T3500 works. See here, which also has a long list of compatible CPUs for the T3500 at the beginning of the thread.

DELL PRECISION T3500 MOTHERBOARD

The issue is that its not EVER going to work. It does work on some because I see them on ebay all the time with the X5650. However I do not know what the bios version and motherboard part number etc is. I'm sure it has something to do with motherboard version and chipset revisions.
But I'm not dell engineering so this information is not EVER forthcoming.

There is no conflicting information.
SOME VERSIONS of the board work. I have ZERO Idea as to which ones those are. I am not Dell engineering and information like that is NEVER released to the public. In recent years even the bios release notes are not forthcoming.
No Idea which ones or which revisions.
Bios Update should be the latest before changing cpu.
Being informed by "others" about bios revisions is a red herring.
Unless they gave you ALL INFORMATION including S Spec, Bios Version, Motherboard revision etc. All Dell Motherboards start with A00 and some go as far as A09 as far as revision.

Ok, so firstly, you give conflicting information.
You say it will "never" work, and then tell me that it does in "some cases"
This has been my source of confusion in the past.
Noted that the lithography is different between chips.
The later dell information suggest that the X5650 is compatible.
Yes there are multiple motherboard revisions - 3 of them in fact - you yourself posted the part numbers without realizing:

The last, is the model I have, and reportedly the latest revision.
The X5650 supports the size and type of ram installed (DDR3 1333 Non ECC) and in banks of three (3 memory channels)
As I have also seem 2009 manufactured systems (my mfg date: 16/12/2009) running this chip, I summarize that it "should" be possible.
I'm informed by others that bios versions as old as A08 will also support this chip, I'm running A17, which from reading the changelog on this update also references the X5650.
I did significant homework before attempting this upgrade.
However, I do remain open minded to the fact that some unlisted or unforseeable quirk or variation may prevent it.

For future reference of other people who find this post with google like I did.
I just procured a second X5650 processor.
Happy to say it works!
I have XPDFX motherboard, which is the second revision of three motherboards for the T3500.
I'm using the A17 bios version - with 12gb of PC3-8500
It would appear that I had a faulty CPU.

Looking at the X5670 , can anyone confirm it will work with the 9KPNV T3500 motherboard ?
