Dell Inspiron 530 Upgrades
Hello, this is my first post on the Dell forums. I own a Dell Inspiron 530 with these specifications: Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20GHz, 4 gigabytes of 800MHz memory and a GeForce GT 610. It is the Mid 2007 530 model. I have an extra CPU laying around, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. I am wondering if I can use it in this desktop. Also, what is the maximum amount of memory I can install into it? Thanks for reading!

You need to check which motherboard version was installed.
The Inspiron 530 has two variants of motherboards, both made by Foxconn and based on the G33M series.
The G33M02, supports up to Core 2 Duo processors and the DG33M03 that supports both the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.
Inspiron 530 systems sold with Pentium Dual-Core or Core 2 Duo processors cannot be upgraded to Core 2 Quad processors without adding at least a 350W power supply and swapping the motherboards to the DG33M03 version.
The reason the G33M02 doesn't support Core 2 Quad processors is because it only has 6 voltage regulator ICs, the DG33M03 has 11.
Note: Prior to upgrading the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.
The Foxconn G33m02 [Dell P/N ORY007] motherboard, supports a maximum of 4gb of DDR2 RAM, the 530 Mini Tower systems with a Foxconn G33m03 motherboard can support 8gb [4 x 2gb modules].
Dell 530s 'Slimline' systems have a Foxconn G33m02 motherboard, that only supports a maximum of 4gb [either4 x 1gb modules, or 2 x 2gb modules].
Note, Also, for Windows to recognize 4gb plus of memory, you need to have a 64-bit operating system installed.

Thanks for the reply, looks like I can't do much else to my 530. Your reply really has helped, thanks again.

Good question. The chipset limit is 8gb, but the documentation says 4gb. Sometimes, as in the case of the E310/3100, the documentation is wrong.
You can upgrade your CPU to a stronger dual core; used E8500 CPUs can be had on eBay for under $10 postpaid. The biggest boost to performance, however, is an SSD boot drive. Installing one of those will be like creating a whole new computer.
