Disk Issue PowerEdge T300 Perc 6/I Raid 5
I have a PowerEdge T300 with Perc 6/I and Raid 5 with 3 hot swap 15k 146 GB drives and 1 hot spare in the fourth slot of the backplane. HDD 0 is blinking amber while HDD1 thru HDD3 are green. I have a new hard disk drive to install. Do I have to reboot into the Perc 6/I setup, disable HDD0, then power down and replace it and power back up into Perc 6/I and add the new drive and then reboot. Will HDD 0 rebuild into the array or do I need to assign the new drive as the new hot spare? Are there instructions on how to replace a drive like this?

Once in the controller then you can just physically pull the failed drive out. After removing, then wait a moment and insert the new drive. If the Virtual Disk was degraded, then it should start rebuilding on its own once the replacement is inserted. If the Virtual Disk was Optimal, then physically pull the drive and insert the replacement. Then from the controller BIOS you can configure the replacement as a hotspare.

Thanks. How would you access the controller? Possibly accessing the controller at boot? I don't have open management software or FAST installed.

Based on your description it sounds like when HDD 0 failed the hotspare you assigned had rebuilt in its place already. That's based on the description of the lights. You can verify this by accessing the controller and seeing if it shows the virtual disk as degraded or not.
You would just need to remove the failed drive and then insert the replacement. If degraded, the replacement should automatically rebuild to the Virtual Disk. If the virtual disk wasn't degraded, then you could just access the controller and assign it as the new hotspare. All this can be done with the server powered as well.

With the Perc 6/i installed the controller BIOS would be accessed by hitting CTRL-R at the prompt for the Poweredge Expandable Raid Controller (PERC). You should see the prompt after the BIOS and Drac finish initializing.

You don't need to replace the drive when you power down. Replace the drive once you have rebooted to the controller.

Thanks Chris. That is what I suspected. Therefore a reboot is required to access the controller with the CTRL-R at boot. Should I power down, then replace the drive, power back up and then access the controller to reassign the drive to the hot spare or see if the VD was reestablished?

Also any chance you think reseating the drive would help at all? It's a long shot but what are your thoughts on this being the first option to attempt?

What is the procedure once I reboot to the controller? Do I have to remove the drive from the VD through the controller software and then physically replace it? Or is HDD 0 already been removed and replaced with the hot spare HDD 3 by the controller software? Therefore in this later case I would just replace the drive and see if it reassigns it to the VD and if not I would then just assign it as the hot spare?
