Inspiron 3647 Small Desktop RAM Limit and Graphics Card Upgrade Limit

Hi everyone,

I have been thinking about upgrading my Inspiron 3647 Small Desktop's RAM and graphics card for a while now and I would like to ask if it can handle 16 GB of RAM (8GBx2) and for any suggestions for an upgrade from a GT 625 that would fit within its case. The computer has 2 DIMM slots so I wouldn't think that 16gb of ram should be a problem. It already has 4 GB pre-installed.

Thanks in advance.

I am being told by Prajwal Sh that it can only hold up to 8GB. Yet SpeedStep is saying that it can hold up to 16GB with a reference for it.

I'd believe SpeedStep on this one.

Finally, third of all, by half-height video cards, do you mean slim/low-profile video cards or half-length video cards? A quick google search hadn't come up with a "half-height" option, only half-length and slim/low-profile video cards.

If you have a SFF case you need slim, low profile video card.

Hi,

Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.

Dell 3647 Desktop supports DDR3 1600 Mhz memory to a maximum of 8GB.

This computer only supports half-height video cards. NVIDIA GeForce GT 625 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 are two discrete graphics card tested by Dell on this system.

First of all, thank you both for replying to my inquiry,

Second of all, I am now confused.  I am being told by Prajwal Sh that it can only hold up to 8GB. Yet SpeedStep is saying that it can hold up to 16GB with a reference for it.

Finally, third of all, by half-height video cards, do you mean slim/low-profile video cards or half-length video cards? A quick google search hadn't come up with a "half-height" option, only half-length and slim/low-profile video cards.

Some clarification would be appreciated,

Thank you again.

Not sure who to believe on this one. I just got a new 8G crucial memory stick that is listed as compatible with my 3647, to add to the 4G originally installed memory. Either when the bios is loading windows10, windows is booting, or shortly thereafter, the machine either freezes with a fuzzy display or crashes altogether. I called crucial and they said it sounded like a driver problem, so I loaded all updated drivers and also bios from the Dell website. Still, the computer is not stable with the 8G by itself or paired with the 4G.

Here's the kicker.... memtest86+ ran 13 passes overnight with 12G of memory installed and zero errors. All of this, along with the Prajwal Sh reply, lead me to believe that Dell knows about a hardware, firmware, or driver problem with these machines supporting 8G memory sticks.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm very disappointed that I bought a machine advertised as supporting 16G and I am stuck on 4G for now and may never get past 8G!

In general you cant mix ranks and density.  16 gigs with a matched pair works fine.

Hi,

I have read your post and i am wondering, where can i buy the Nvidia GeForce Gt 635 gpu.  I have looked in amazon, ebay, etc and the only one i found is an exact match for the reference but is made by HP. http://goo.gl/v5QGgv
