sm bus controller - driver not installed

I had to reload windows xp home edition from the CDs that came with my computer.  I've managed to get everything else working but the SM BUS Controller still has a yellow question mark.  I can't seem to locate the driver anywhere.  Any hints?

You need to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard.  They should be on your Dell Resource CD or they can be downloaded from the Dell support web site.  If you had told us your computer model, I could have proviced a direct link.

Wow Steve,

Thanks for the fast response!  (although I'm just now reading it.)  Yesterday was a very long day.  Usually I provide way more information then anyone would ever need.  It's a Dell 2400.  I will look for the chipset drivers when I get back work (that's were the computer is).  I'll let you know if I find them.  Thanks for the help!!

Steve,

I also have a DELL 4500 and needed to reinstall everything from th DELl CD's but the SM Bus Controller shows not installed in device manager. I cannot install from the Dell Resource CD because it says that I have windows XP SP1 installed. I updated windows XP thru windows update before taking care of the USB Bus Controller. Any ideas how to get out of this bind?

SP1 should not prevent you from installing the chipset drivers.  Go to the following site and download the chipset driver installation utility for your system and see if that works:

UPDATE: THANK YOU!   IT IS FIXED with driver R41334!!!!

Someone at Dell should take a look at this, because is a little bit confusing... see below.

You sent me R41334, the system driver Intel 800 series integrated chipset rev. A06. That one I already have in the resource CD and it is installed ok

Intel Chipset INF Update: The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to the operating system how the chipset components will be configured. This is needed for the proper functioning of the following features: - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services

- AGP Support, - IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support, - USB Support,  Identification of Intel Chipset Components in Device Manager

What I need is a driver for the SM Bus Controller. Support CD says Controller Driver: Intel USB 2.0 Rev A00, but when I try to install it, it says it cannot install.

1) This file is extracted from the resource CD à C:\dell\drivers\R41331 

2) From the C:\DELL\Drivers\R41331\README.HTM.

Microsoft USB 2.0 Driver for Windows XP

Introduction

This kit contains the following:

a. USB 2.0 EHCI package

b. QFE fix for existing USB driver stack on Windows XP

Both packages need to be installed to support USB 2.0 on windows XP. It is extremely important that you run all 6 steps below.

USB 2.0 ECHI package

The USB EHCI package contains the Enhanced Host Controller mini-port driver. The INF file is responsible for loading the USBEHCI.SYS host controller miniport on a Windows XP system, and the host controller coinstaller (HCCOIN.DLL) is responsible for synchronizing communication between the Enhanced Host Controller and the companion host controllers.

QFE fix for existing USB driver stack on Windows XP

The QFE package is responsible for updating USBPORT.SYS and USBHUB.SYS on Windows XP. Localized versions of this package only differ in terms of the QFE installation user interface (UI) displayed during package execution.

Installation

  1. From Device Manager right-click on the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller with the Yellow Question Mark next to it.

  3. From the drop down menu select Properties, click on the Driver tab and select Update Driver.

  5. From the Hardware Update Wizard screen select the Advanced option and choose Next.

  7. From the next screen deselect all options except for Include this location in the search, browse to the location in which the driver files were extracted, select the EHCI Package folder and choose Next for the files to be installed.

         I CLICKED NEXT BUT IT SAYS IT CANNOT INSTALL.
