Upgrading from XP to Windows 7.
I have an XPS 400. I have done the windows 7 upgrade advisor, and it stats there are 3 issues, but everything else is compatible. What it says are
1. dell photo aio printer 924 -dell inklet drivers - Does this mean If I upgrade to win 7 my printer will not work?
2. intel r pro/1000 PL network connection ---- before installing windows 7 go to the device manufacturers website to download latest.... Confused as I went to Dell for my specific computer, and it states there arent any updates etc. So a bit confused?
3. Power DVD - known issues. I know my DVD on my tower isnt working. Which I dont care about.
Im just trying to get the first two understood and squared away to make sure all goes well. Do I go to the intel website? Which I did but cannot seem to find what I need to download latest intel pro/1000pl.
Not a computer wiz. Just trying to keep this simple as pie. :)

Thanks for writing to us.
We see this model is not tested for windows 7, so even if you find the windows 7 driver for the wireless card and for printer, they are not guaranteed to work.
We would suggest to stick to original windows or to windows vista.

There is a Vista 32-bit driver for this printer here. The Vista driver may -or not- work with Win 7. You might try installing it in Win 7 in Compatibility Mode for Vista. You might post on the Printers forum to see if anyone got this one working with Win 7.
For the NIC, read this and poke around on Intel's download site to see if you can find a Win 7 driver for that onboard Ethernet. If a Win 7 driver doesn't exist, you could try the 32-bit Vista driver. You could always disable the onboard NIC and install a PCI-e NIC card that's compatible with Win 7. Or install a PCI-e WiFi card or get an inexpensive USB>Ethernet dongle to connect a USB port on the PC to a router's Ethernet port or a USB>WiFi dongle to connect to a WiFi router.
PowerDVD is just software so you could try installing that in XP Compatibility Mode in Win 7.
Keep in mind that there's no direct "upgrade" from XP to Win 7. You have to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install. So all your personal files must be backed up on external media first. And you need to find the product keys for all your software (eg, Microsoft Office, etc.) before you upgrade.
And if you don't already have it, upgrade to the latest version of BIOS before you install Win 7. You also might want to image the hard drive on external media before you wipe and start the upgrade, in case you decide to revert back to XP for whatever reason...

There are no issues with win7 on this system.
HOWEVER there are zero upgrades from xp to 7 only new clean install.
