XPS 8900, slow, knocking noise?

This 4 month old XPS 8900 (i7-6700, 16GB ram) is slower then my 8 year old XPS 420 (q6600, 6GB ram). What a disappointment! Also, from day 1, whenever I start the computer, I hear a knocking noise for a few seconds. And when this happens the quick launch icons disappear for a few seconds. Also, the computer is very slow. I hesitate to call Dell support. I called 3 times and talked to 3 different people for about 1 hour, to finally get hung up on. This happen on 3 different  occasions. Dell support is not what it used to be. I'm wondering if I have a bad HD or video card?

Thanks for any help

It would be helpful to know what operating systems you are running on both. What test and software you run to compare the systems, etc. Turn the XPS 8900 off, open the cover, turn it on. Try to isolate the location of the noise.
