You may not need a new drive.  Check the system setup to make sure the SATA operation is set correctly - it was probably in AHCI mode initially and the replacement board may have the drive set for a different mode (RAID, ATA, etc.).  If AHCI doesn't work, try RAID -- chances are the drive is just fine.  F2 at powerup to get into system setup to check/adjust the setting.

If you do need a drive,

Any standard 2.5" 7 or 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive will work.

If you don't have a set of recovery media, you will need to contact Dell for one.

I do not see a 'RAID' where would that be?

My only options is AHCI, ATA, and Intel Smart Response Technology

I didn't mean to mark as the answer (I wish it was)

Okay *Deep Breaths*

  • Originally my laptop started turning off after about 5 minutes of use
  • Laptop beeped 7 times
  • I replaced Motherboard
  • Laptop no longer turned off
  • I asked about this on dell before, they told me HDD and Motherboard.
  • Computer no longer heats up like it did previously (Yes I used thermal paste to put on the heat sink and CPU)
    • Replacement Motherboard this happens:
  • Media test failure, check cable. (CURRENT)
  • No Bootable Device, Please insert boot disk and press any key. (Current)

So I was afraid it isn't working, but it does pull up and show me the model number and everything. (When I unplug the HDD, it goes away.)

I don't have a warranty with this computer. (Expired in dec 2015)

I just need a new step to powering up this computer, I am willing to pay for it I just have to know what it is.

Thanks for helping me.

It sounds like the hard drive mode is set incorrectly.  Reset the SATA operation to AHCI and see if it'll then boot.  If it won't, try the Intel Smart Response.

I pressed f2 like you said and it recognizes my hard drive and reads it out to me in the Main tab.

My only options is AHCI, ATA, and Intel Smart Response Technology

"If you don't have a set of recovery media, you will need to contact Dell for one."

What do you mean by that?

Sorry, I heard a bit of hope that I don't have to pay for a HDD

Setup does see the hard drive

  • My only options is AHCI, ATA, and Intel Smart Response Technology
  • AHCI- See's my HDD IN SETUP
  • ATA- See's my HDD in SETUP
  • Intel Smart Response Technology- See's my HDD in SETUP

First things first:  does the setup see the hard drive?

If it does, try AHCI first.  If that doesn't work, set it to RAID and re-try.

If you can't boot in any of the modes, run a full hard drive diagnostic first (F12 at powerup).  It may be you need to reinstall Windows -- if the drive returns a fault code, replace it.  Otherwise, a simple reinstall may fix the problem.

What leads you to believe the drive has failed?

You'll need a new drive -- along with a call to Dell to purchase a set of recovery media if you haven't prepared that ahead of time.
