To clean or not to clean. Dell Dimension 9200 Quad Core

I am using two very old Dimension 9200 Quad Core Desktops which perform very well indeed and do everything I want.

I was contemplating removing the heatsink and fan to clean all the dust and dirt out but not sure if this is a good idea or not. I am aware that if I do this I will need to clean off the old thermal compound and replace.

Am I taking an unnecessary risk in doing this and maybe it is just better left alone?

If I do do this what is best to use to remove the old compound and is there any particular type of thermal compound that I should reapply?

With computers that are working OK, the best choice is leave it alone. Look at the inside to see if any dirt, dust or pet hair has built up. Clean that up carefully and leave the cpu alone.

Many thanks for your advice - I will leave the CPU well alone.
