OPTIPLEX 780 CPU upgrade failure

Hi I just got an OPTIPLEX 780 from work and I'm trying to make it run like new for my boy. I bought modified intel Xeon 5460 3.16 GHz 12m cash and replaced the old pentum dual core with it. Now when I plug the power supply cable the computer starts by itself on full fan speed and 2,3,4 led lights flashing in green. It doesn't boot or start the monitor. So what's the problem and can I solve it somehow? (The CPU is bought used but in good condition and working order used so the problem might be there)

Well the Xeon is modified for socket 775. Did u mean that it's for 771 socket or that even the modified one is not supported? Thanks for the quick response.

The 780 and its chipset does not support XEON processors.

The Optiplex 780 has a Q45 which supports 3xxx Series,45nm,65nm NOT 5xxx Series Xeon cpu's like

the intel Xeon 5460. The best moded 3xxx series xeon the 780 is capable of  running is a xeon x3363. For that you'll need to flash a moded bios which you can get here:

I would not try using a xeon as 3xxx series ones are all dual core. If you want a quad core you have to get a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650. If you want to use 5xxx series xeons in a similar dell you have to get a Optiplex 380 Motherboard they are $16 on ebay.
