Upgrading Inspiron 560 to Core 2 Quad 3.0 GHz - Do I need a new BIOS?

Hello 

I'm in the process of doing several upgrades, including going from a Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz to a Core 2 Quad 3.0 GHz.  I've already confirmed that the CPU is compatible with the MB / chipset.  The CPU should arrive today (July 3rd). 

I've upgraded to the latest BIOS on the Dell site for the Inspiron 560.  However, will a different BIOS be needed for the Quad Core? If so, where do I find it?  

Also, the BIOS I have gives precious little information about the hardware. For example, no details about CAS latency.  Is there a completely different BIOS available?

Power Supply and Heatsink as well as version of the board all count.

QX9650 is 45nm and the Core 2 Extreme Edition and is a 130W cpu.  This part works fine in Precision T3400 with 525W power supply.  Using in a 560 will likely damage the motherboard VRM and 305W power supply.    Other models that use parts like this have much larger power supply.

There is no "different BIOS" available - if you have the latest for that model, that's all there is.

There are motherboard part numbers and revisions such as Dell 0K83V0 A00
Sockets Supported: LGA775
• DC power supply
• Wattage: 305W

Many models in the 5XX series require the 350W power supply and Copper Performance heatsink in addition to specific motherboard support for Quad Core.

I'm not certain as to the accuracy of the ark links, since at least two PCI Express stats are definitely wrong.

I'm sorry, but you totally lost me there. Saying it may not work is definite.  I'm not sure where you got that it will not work.  

Agreed, it may need more power and better cooling.

As for modifying the BIOS, I have no issues with that, but I do not see where the CPU data can be modified, it appears to be read only.  Hopefully you can offer some insight.

No, there are not "different" BIOS for each CPU. The latest BIOS A06 applies to all CPU. No, you cannot "modify" our BIOS. 18D1Y was the latest revision motherboard.

Inspiron 560 motherboards =

Incorrect.  The BIOS A06 and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 are working fine, spectacularly actually, even with all 4 cores stressed to 100%, with no modifications to the BIOS, no modifications to the power supply, and no modifications to the stock heat sink.

This 7 year old PC now has 8 GB of RAM, a 3.0 GHz Quad Core CPU, external SATA III, external USB 3.0, an SSD, and two HDDs.

Does anyone know if the Inspiron 560 will work with a QX9650? The specs are the same as the Q9650 but the multiplier in unlocked and the TDP is 130w instead of 95w. Otherwise they are identical as far as I can see from Ark.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have tried the QX9650 and it does work with a couple of caveats. First, the machine sometimes doesn't post and just starts the fans at full speed.  After a hard restart, it posts but with an error message saying that either the core to bus ratio or vid has failed. Pressing F1 to continue will allow it to boot to Windows and it runs fine from there. However, it is running rather hot; high 50s at idle. I have ordered a Q9650 which has the lower TDP to see if it resolves these issues, in which case I will resell the QX9650. I would rather have the stability and better cooling than the ability to overlock with ThrottleStop that I had been hoping for.
