Error File:\BCD 0xc0000098

I have an inspiron 7457 running windows 10, this morning it ran an update on closing down and since I have not been able to boot up, instead it stopped on a blue screen page RECOVERY, saying "Your PC needs to be repaired. The Boot Configuration Data file dosen't contain valid information for an operating system." Error message is File:\BCD 0xc0000098. I don't have any recovery disks and need the laptop for my disabled son. Could anyone help me with this issue? Thanks

First thing:  power up and start pressing F12 -- boot into the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test on the hard drive.

Do any errors starting with 2000- show up?  If so, post the exact sequence of numbers.

You can try one of the repair modes for Windows 10 -- see here:

If your drive is OK then another possibility is the Boot files may have been corrupted.  If you check the F12 key during boot and see a Boot Device Menu, what do you show as boot devices?  Depending if this is a Legacy install or UEFI, it might be a Windows Boot Manager or a specific Drive.

An automatic recovery may repair the issue and it may take several tries.  If it runs a couple of times and you have an option to cancel, try that.

If you cannot get some progress you will need some type of external boot media.  If you had made a Recovery drive, you could use it or download the Windows install media and boot to it.  I am not familiar with how a Dell Recovery drive works.  But booting to the Advanced options and using the Command prompt may allow commands to be completed to repair your BCD file.
