I have a dvd player but no driver

Laptop is Inspiron 15 7559. I have a working outboard dvd player (Sony DRU840A). The only problem is Sony is not even archiving the driver any more - too old I guess  - and can't find it even on the few driver websites I trust (viruses and all of that). I tried to talk to Sony but unless you are registered with one of their products...and like I said they don't have that driver archived any more.

So I was hoping this laptop would have a generic driver that would run this Sony but doesn't seem to work at all. Is there a generic driver inside this laptop or is there one out there that would "drive" this DVD player? Thanks. (btw my first laptop and love it)

Hi Pappy1943,

Thanks for posting.

Have you tried looking here?  http://dell.to/2s3Ga9H

Robert you answered my query in an indirect way. The laptop did an update check and said everything was updated etc. I said "wait a minute", you mean there is a driver for this Sony that I plugged in and turned on? The computer said Yes lol. Then I did some kind of search about dvd player not working etc etc and ran across the phrase DVD Player. And I said "oh yeah" you need a dvd player which evidently they didn't install either (I knew that from my Vista, my last computer, so I made quite a leap).

So bottom line got a VLC (which I believe I had 10-15 years ago with either Vista or XP) and it's that old Sony is working great. No rust from the storage I guess. Thanks Robert.

Glad it worked!  BTW, please be careful with VLC and not adjust the volume above the normal limits, we've heard of customers blowing speakers using this utility, and Tech Support will ask you to remove it prior to troubleshooting anything dealing with audio (Just FYI).
