Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop - CD/DVD Drive loud noise

I have a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.

When I put a CD in the drive, it makes a loud noise and the laptop vibrates. However, this only happens when I put a CD-RW disc in the drive. When I put another CD in, such as an audio CD, it doesn't make this noise.

Does this suggest the CD/DVD drive needs replacing?

Steveu9,

You can try other types of media in the drive to see if the noise remains. At the link below is an option to run the diagnostics on the drive to see if it is faulty. You must have a disk in the drive to perform the diagnostics.  Also, at the the link below under the drivers section are  cd/dvd firmware downloads. To determine which drive you have in the computer you can click on the configuration tab on the site or input your system service tag. This will show you the hardware information for your computer. You can then choose to download and install the firmware. I cannot verify that updating the firmware will resolve the noise issue.  If you determine that the drive is faulty and you want to replace it. You can call the the dell spare parts dept. The number to call is 1-877-717-3355
