Dell M3800 not working well Dell E2416H Monitor

Hi,

As the subject suggests, I have a Dell Precision M3800.  I have always used dual monitor with no issue.

My previous screen was an old Samsung 23 Inch (don't know the model exactly) and connected via Mini DP to HDMI.  Worked a dream.

Manage to find a buyer and though - "Let me upgrade - get a Dell Monitor - Dell plays well with Dell".

So got the Dell E2416H Monitor - with a Min DP to DP cable - for the past month I have not been able to fix an issue where by the screen does not refresh itself when you type or a sql comand finishes processing - just looks like it's still process even though it completed minutes ago - but the screen did not refresh the basics of what a monitor should display.

This is such an irritating that I have even gone to the extent of buying a USB 3 docking station and running through DisplayLink - with joy.

Please let me know if someone has a solution that differs from my all my colleagues - their advice is to go buy a Samsung monitor.

Thanks,

Daniel

Clarify, when you stated, "I have always used dual monitor with no issue", does that mean an external monitor in extended mode from the laptop with the laptop lid open and acting as Primary?

It would be helpful to know what Samsung monitors they are comparing to the low cost, entry level E2416H.

Disable all power management options for the LCD, monitor, and GPU, then run those SQL processes and retest.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the response.

Just to clarify, yes, as you have explained correctly, external monitor in extended mode.  For the sake of making up for my initial vague description: -

I have four E2416H 'entry level' monitors connected to my M3800 on a quad stand.  3 of the monitors connected via a USB 3.0 (D3100) - 2 of these via the DisplayLink recommended VANTEC USB 3.0 TO DISPLAYPORT 4K DISPLAY ADAPTER and the 3rd is a straight DP to DP cable.  I initially had the fourth on a USB adapter as well - but as part of my trouble shouting I have connected the 4th via the MiniDP port on the laptop to DP to rule out DisplayLink as the broken piece of the chain.

My previous screens were company screens, they bought Samsung, I don't know the model without making an awkward phone call, which I am avoiding.  Before the M3800 I was using the Latitude 6500, 6400, 6330 laptops in the last many years - with a double and sometime triple external extended desktop setup with the laptop lid open.  Never had this problem before.

I have been a dedicated DELL fan for the past 10+ years - this is my first support request in that time.

Since I posted yesterday I have been searching intensely on this issue (as you can imagine for a SQL and .Net developer, not seeing text is quite a big problem, even if it is a semi frequent intermittent disappearance\non refresh).  I have now got the idea it has something to do with windows 10 anniversary update in conjunction with something that has been added to Visual Studio Service Pack, possibly DotNet Framework.

The closest support post I have found on this specific topic is:-

connect.microsoft.com/.../ssms-2016-continues-to-have-video-window-refresh-issue-when-query-window-is-closed

and

en.community.dell.com/.../19597541

however I cannot disable my Inter Integrated Graphics Card on the M3800 (as far as I can tell - will be happy if I am wrong)

In summary, I don't believe it is the screens (as I don't have the issue in chrome etc.. could possibly happen in ie but will leave that can closed).  However I do believe it is an incompatibility between the hardware (and associated drivers - re:- hardware I'm referring to the architecture of the Intel and NVIDIA configuration) and Microsoft and what ever update they have made to enhance their IDE in visual studio in particular (could possibly be happening in other applications that I am not aware of).  I have sen allot of post describing similar issues with regards to WFC application deployed on Windows 10, which could suggest that the DotNet Framework 4.6.2 and the Graphics Drivers+Adapters in the M3800 have created an incompatibility\bug\unintended feature between you giants of the industry.

I am hoping to get a more precise understanding of the issue, which is the why I have posted on this forum.  If you can help me gain more insight, I will be highly appreciative.  If you can provide me a solution - don't know what I'll do, but I'll be chuffed as Larry.

Many thanks

Good troubleshooting. Is there anyway to to simplify the setup just for quick testing purposes? Test one monitor at a time directly to the laptop, run the applications to see if the issues appear. Then one monitor at a time on the D3100, run the applications to see if the issues appear.
