Firewire card for XPS8500

Hello.

I need to buy a firewire card for an XPS8500 running Windows 10 Home so I can download video from a Canon ZR 500 video camcorder. Does anyone know one that will work? Is there another option for downloading the video to my PC (it only has USB 2.0 and 3.0)?

Thank you.

I think the least cost - most likely to work well option for the XPS 8500 is to add a PCIe 1x card to the 8500.

Here is a review of some choices

A couple of the cards support line-level power for devices that need power from firewire. The gotcha is the power is 4 pin Molex, so if you need this, then you also need a SATA power to molex adapter ( they cost a few bucks) and a spare SATA power connection. The 8500 has I think five SATA power ports so you likely have one available.

I'd read the reviews of the cards since some use firewire for storage, and some use it for video capture and make sure the Win10 support is there with the drivers.

I don't think the USB to firewire adapters work well for video. They barely work for storage...

good luck, and let us know what you go with. I have a laptop with firewire, but it won't be around forever.

Windows 10 removes the Video Software as well as media center.

Windows live essentials 2012 is no longer available to put movie maker and the other parts back.

Windows Essentials 2012

Support Ended January 10, 2017

Although support has ended, Windows Essentials 2012 programs will continue to work.

Windows Essentials 2012 contains the following programs:

Photo Gallery (Windows Photo Gallery 2012 Build 16.4.3528.331)

Movie Maker (Version 2012 Build 16.4.3528.0331)

Windows Live Writer

Windows Live Mail (Version 2012 Build 16.4.3564.1216)

You will either have to revert to windows 7 pro or windows 8 media center edition

or you will need a new program for firewire video.

Cards using Texas instruments chipset are the most compatible.

AND some programs will not function properly without the LEGACY Firewire driver.
