Dell Inspiron 15-5559 takes forever to turn on

Compared to the other Dell Inspiron 5559s I have seen, and in fact compared to all laptops I have seen, this start-up time is not normal.  I don't mean how long it takes to boot to Windows.  I mean how long it takes to get it to display the Dell logo upon start-up.

There is no power light (since for some reason Dell decided it doesn't need one??), so I can never tell if I successfully turned it on or not until a good 6 seconds later when the keyboard's backlight lights up.  Then it takes another 3 seconds for the screen to turn on.  This definitely has something to do with the CMOS, or the BIOS, or something.  Everything is up-to-date, including drivers.  Please don't treat me like someone who doesn't know how to use a computer.

This has been an issue since I received the laptop in 2016.  Dell told me it's normal.  Dell was wrong.  Nothing new there.  I recently used another Dell Inspiron 15-5559 and was surprised by how responsive it was at powering on.  A function mastered on computers since computers were first made, and yet it performs badly on this 2016 model.

Any suggestions besides paying Dell a fortune?  It is not in warranty.

Have you disabled unnecessary programs from the Start up tab in Task Manager? There are quite a few of those that just slow down boot. With all the programs and processes that load during boot, 6-10 seconds is about average. According to the manual the power light is the same as the battery status light--on the front edge, left side.#10 in the illustration-- downloads.dell.com/.../inspiron-15-5559-laptop_setup guide4_en-us.pdf

Hi there,

I am having the very same issue. I know it's a first world problem but it takes my 15 5559 about 11 seconds to see the logo. Considering I have an ssd and 8gb of ram and no programs in the start up menu this is very very slow.

I contacted dell, and they told me it was normal which is complete ***.

All my drivers and bios are up to date .

As a PC Technician I used to always recommend DELL, but not anymore.

Mary G, you don't seem to understand.  The boot up time is before you even see the logo, nothing to do with Windows.  I could run Linux and it would still have the same issue.  The manual is incorrect- That is a charging light or a hard drive indicator, depending if you press Fn + H or not on each boot.  It is not a power light in any situation.  My old Dell Inspiron 15-5547 has two lights for these same purposes instead of one, and the charging indicator did light up when it booted.  This one doesn't bother.

KenJC, I got the same response from them.  I also told them I'm willing to pay for a button with a power light, instead of the cheap thing they  gave with this laptop with a line for the light but with no LED.  LEDs are so cheap, how cheap could they get that they would only put these in XPS models??

Updating my BIOS did improve it.  It was a recent update.  So make sure it is updated.

That said, it is still an issue.

It is not in all models, even though we both have it (Ken and I).  I have worked on a lower-end Inspiron 5559 that turns on much faster!  You don't wait more than a second to see the logo.  So maybe it is only higher-end models.

In either case, I sold the laptop in favor of keeping my lighter Surface 3 and home-built desktop.  I'm going to wait a few years before buying another laptop.

Dell has some serious things to work on.  For starters, stop using Indians for support.

I still recommend them, but not the Inspiron.  Ever.  I never did, actually.  I had problems from the first one that I bought.  When my 10 year old Inspiron was working better than my brand new one, that was just sad.

I wish anyone with this problem the best of luck.

Does that BIOS have an option between a Minimal and Thorough hardware check?  Typically that's all done AFTER the Dell logo is displayed (but before Windows starts loading), but maybe this system works differently.  If that's set to Auto or Thorough, see if changing it to Minimal improves anything.

Hi there,

Yup it does have a Minimal and Thorough hardware check and mine is set to minimal, but it makes no difference
